  2. SCORING CLINIC PREFACE • This is a PowerPoint to help high school scorers comply with NFHS scoring procedures. • First, text on this screen describes happenings on the court. Try to make the correct entries on the scoresheet. • Then, a sample scoresheet on the next slide shows how to correctly score what happened.

VOLLEYBALL SCORINGSAMPLE MATCH2010 • This is a match between Adams High School and Madison High School played at Madison Gym on October 3rd 2010. • The scorer is Teresa Jones, the first referee is Bob Boese and the second referee is Sam Breaux. • The scorer should be at the table 20 minutes before the first set starts.

  5. Basic Information • Write in • Schools Names (at the very top) • Date and time • Location • SET number (There are 3 to 5 sets in a match. First team to win 3 sets wins the match.) • Your name • Officials’ names (R1 is the up official and R2 is the down official.) • 10 minutes before the start of the first set each team should give the scorer a roster of the members of the team. The scorer doesn’t have to do anything with this roster until lineups are provided. BUTtell the R2 if a roster wasn’t turned in.

  7. Put in the school names again -- on the side of the sheet that matches the side of the court where each team will be playing. Add line-ups from line-up sheets provided by the coaches. Mark which team has first serve (the R2 should tell you who has it).

REMEMBER • If you haven’t gotten the lineup for both teams when 2 minutes are left in the warm-up period, tell this to the R2. • If a number appears on the lineup sheet that isn’t on the team roster (remember, you should have gotten this when 10 minutes were left in the warmup period) – tell this to the R2.

  12. REMEMBER • If a team has not written down a libero number on their lineup sheet, they will not have a libero for that set. • NO LIBERO LISTED = NO LIBERO • They may still have one for another set – but only if they write down a libero number on the lineup for that set.

  21. Adams’ libero (#42) comes in to serve for #3. (This is not a substitution and only shows up on the Libero Tracking Sheet.) • Put a triangle around serving position 2 to show that is the only place the libero can serve in the rotation. • Adams’ libero scores three more points (points 6, 7 and 8). • Put a triangle around every point the libero scores in both the boxes and running score. • then they lose the rally

SCORING IS DEMANDING • Scoring correctly is very demanding and will take all of your concentration. • It is particularly important that you have an accurate scoresheet that contains all of the necessary information. • Try to be quick and efficient, but don’t hesitate to tell your R2 if you need something explained or need more time.

  24. TRY TO BE NEAT • The scoresheet will start to get crowded with numbers and squares and triangles • The scoresheet will get more crowded with substitutions and time-outs • TRY TO BE NEAT • IT IS BETTER TO TAKE YOUR TIME AND TELL THE R2 YOU ARE NOT READY YET, THAN TO BE SLOPPY

  26. REMEMBER • Mark the scoresheet in three (3) places for every substitution: • 1 - player number (add the new number) • 2 - box score (put S or Sx and player numbers) • 3 - substitutions (put a hash mark)

Adams loses the rally • Madison scores one point (point 9) on Adams #5's serve (put this in a box) • Madison’s libero (#23) replaces #8 (not a substitution) to serve. • Put a triangle around serving position 4 to show this is the only place the libero can serve. • Adams substitutes #30 for #7 (Sx)

  34. ASK IF YOU NEED TO • Ask the R2 “What just happened?” if you don’t know. • Don’t ever guess what happened • If the R2 doesn’t explain what happened and there is a serve, make sure you find out what happened at the next dead ball. • You MUST know what’s going on all the time.

  35. REMEMBER • Anything that happens during a player’s term of service is marked in the boxes following that player’s number – even if it is something the other team does. • Substitutions (Sx and the player’s numbers) • Timeouts (Tx) • Penalties (P and the player’s number)

  38. REMEMBER • Teams almost always call time out when the other team is serving • Mark Tx in the box score • Write in the score at the time of the timeout in the time out box • A team only gets two timeouts per set. Tell the R2 when they have used two. If they call a third timeout, tell the R2.

Adams scores one point (point 19) on Madison #10's serve (put this in a box) • Adams scores two more points (20 and 21) then #2 on Madison calls the R1 a “no talent jerk” and gets a red card. • Adams scores point 22 on the red card. Enter this in the Comments section and put Px22 in the running score and hatch 22 in the box score. You will put this notation in the Comments section of the scoresheet of every later set as well. • Adams then scores two more points (points 23 and 24) then loses the rally.

  48. REMEMBER • You are the OFFICIAL scorer • You are part of the officiating team with the R1 and R2 • Your score is the correct score! • So… • Always do your best and • Ask the R2 for help if you need it.

  49. AND ANOTHER THING… • For Set #2 and later, teams are listed on the same side of the scoresheet as the side of the court they are on. • When the libero goes back to serve and doesn’t leave the court there must be a double replacement of other players. This is not a substitution and you don’t have to mark anything unless the replacement player has never been in the game before. Tell that to the R2.
