  2. Purpose and Definition of Student Grievances The grievance process provides a mechanism for dispute resolution of select issues brought by students, that is fair and unbiased.

  3. What are the Primary Sources of Grievance at SMU? Failure of the program to followwritten policies Conflicting policies in University publications Claims of discrimination by faculty Claims of non-compliance with ADA requirements

  4. Understanding Who Adjudicates Grievances Vice President of Academic Affairs Vice President of Enrollment and Student Services

  5. What is the Vice President’s Scope of Authority? AVP—Academic matters: Scope includes academic, classroom / clinical behaviors or any circumstance occurring within the learning environment. VP-ESS—Disciplinary matters: Scope includes issues outside the classroom or clinical setting including acts of intimidation, physical aggression violation of code of ethics / conduct or issues of accommodation.

  6. What is NOT Subject to Grievance? Didactic grading, assessment of clinical performance, policies related to matriculation, or failure to meet the programs technical standards are not subject to grievance unless the student can demonstrate failure by the institution to follow policy, there is evidence of discrimination, or evidence the student has not violated standards of academic integrity or professionalism.

  8. How can faculty avoid student grievances? Recognize red flags from student behavior Write out counseling notes and date Follow all University policy and procedures Utilize mid-term evaluations Familiarize yourself with ADA compliance issues

  9. What Should a Faculty Member Do When a Student Wants to Grieve? Review policy with student (Student Catalog) Notify your manager Codify and file your supporting documents

Final Thoughts About the Grievance Process Students engaged in a grievance can register for non-clinical classes while an appeal is being heard Students will be allowed to collect financial aid during the grievance process Documentation is the key to success in preparation for potential student grievance
