IAS Coaching in Lucknow • The Group ‘A’ civil services in India are divided into two broad segments: • The All India Services --- IAS, IPS & IFOS • The Central Services ---- IFS, IRS and about 15 other services • The examination system as it stands today has a three tier structure consisting of Prelims (which are held in mid-summer), Mains and the Interview. The notification for the exam is generally issued in February and the results are declared by April the next year. Therefore, the examination process is itself about 14 months long.

It is our experience that an aspirant who is well up in English, has a good academic record and has a high level of awareness of the contemporary events would still need about 6-8 month of sustained class room study to come up to the level wherein she could clear the Prelims in the first attempt itself.

  4. The Civil Service Prelims test the spread and range of the knowledge levels of the aspirants extending from Anthropology, Archaeology, Ancient Indian History, Geography etc. on one side to developments in Medicine, Technology, Space Sciences etc. on the other. Understanding of constitutional systems and political processes in India and elsewhere is a basic necessity.

  5. As per a long standing selection mechanism, the number of aspirants to be allowed to clear the Prelims is 14 times the number of actual service wise vacancies advertised for that year. For example, if the number of vacancies in All India Services and other Group ‘A’ services put together is, say, 800, then the number of aspirants clearing the Prelims would be about 11,200 only.
