  3. Oxford County IS Team • Current Oxford County IS Support Staff • Network Administrator • Help Desk Coordinator • Database Analyst • Network Support Technician (x7)

  4. Services and support provided • Hardware - Desktop computers, printers, switches • Servers • Back-up systems • Wide Area support – Internet, remote locations, DSL, Fibre • Wireless network support • Software support and licensing

Services and support provided • October 2012 - Present • two staff members on-site • Network Administrator • Network Technician • assured network was secure by changing all passwords on network servers and network devices • considered normal operating procedure when a senior IT staff member leaves an organization

  6. Services and support provided • October 2012 – Present • 6 Information Systems (IS) staff members support day-to-day needs as required • Staff dispatched depending on expertise required • IS staff receive support requests using the ACR system

  7. Observations • Server hardware running frontline business applications • majority of Dell servers are between four and ten years old • warranty expired on the majority of servers – parts may not be readily available • constantly running out of disk space

  8. Observations • Server operating systems • Windows 2000 (end of life - no support) • Windows 2003 • Windows 2008

  9. Observations • Dell EqualLogic Virtual Network Storage device • plugged into the power and running - not attached or configured for the network • almost three years old – out of warranty

  10. Observations • Applications running on “Desktop” hardware and operating systems • Tape backup hardware • > 48 hours to do a full back up • hardware is 8 + years old

  11. Observations • Wireless network replaced with a new system • old system - pass phrase shared among all staff – vulnerable to outside access • new system uses Windows authentication - proves user is a Town employee and computer equipment is a registered Town asset

  12. Observations • Rapid Fibre Project • re-located from co-location in the Town server room with connections bridged to the inside network

  13. Observations • Microsoft licensing • some software purchased with systems • no software assurance (SA) on Office products found to date • server operating systems do not have software assurance • SA authorizes continued use of installed software on servers and workstations by paying a percentage of the original cost yearly

  14. Next steps • Shared Services Agreement • cost recovery • full-time technical support • other levels of expertise on as-need basis • 1 year contract
