Learning Outcomes • Define what a project is • 3 Characteristics • Explain diagrammatically the five (5) process groups of project management • List and briefly explain the nine (9) knowledge areas of project management • Explain how the nine knowledge areas integrate into with the five processes

What is a Project? • A temporary endeavour undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result • Projects are temporary • Start Date and an End Date • Projects produce a unique deliverable: • Product (e.g. XBOX) • Capability to perform a service (e.g. Can now securely store customer data) • Result (e.g. Research statistics, now we know what people are looking for in portable media players). • Progressive Elaboration • Over time projects get more refined/specific

  5. Exercise • Consider I202 IT Project Management as a project • How is it temporary? • What are the unique deliverables?(product, service, result) • Will there be progressive elaboration?

  13. 9 Knowledge Areas • Communications • Who needs to communicate with who,what do they need to talk about, and when will it happen? • Risk • What are the potential risks in the project and what will we do if they become a reality? • Procurement • Will we outsource parts of the project? And/or will we sell thefinished project to someone else?
