  1. Just Think No Sam Ryan Roni Frances

  2. Summary Opinions on abortion in response to Todd Akin’s statement Attacks Akin’s credibility Moves onto attacking Republicans as a whole Basically calls them hippocrites Her argument is more left-leaning

  3. Persona Educated- Higher Diction: “troglodyte”, “antediluvian” Left Winged- “Bachmann-esque”, writes for the NY Times, focuses on the Todd Akin Scandal, mentions Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan

  4. Audience As a writer for the NY Times, she’s probably aiming for a more democratic/left-leaning crowd of a more educated status, hence why she insults republicans

  5. Purpose To assert her opinion about the “chauvinistic” and “medieval” standings that republicans have, specially on abortion. Too prevail that abortion should be an option to women and that women cannot prevent pregnancy during rape.

  6. Argument It’s ludicrous that some people actually believe that women can prevent becoming impregnated during rape. Abortion should be a choice and there shouldn’t be a bunch of old-school, middle-aged men making that decision for them.

  7. Allusions Todd Akin background- when discussing abortion on national TV, he stated that in the case of rape, women would have the ability to shut down their reproductive system. Therefor, abortion shouldn’t be an option. Michele Bachmann- Republican representative of Minnesota who opposes abortion and ran to be the republican candidate for the 2012 elections.

  8. Allusions Dr. John Willke- Pro-life activist who also believes women can prevent pregnancy during rape and is involved in the republican community. Mitt Romney- Presidential candidate for the 2012 race, governor of Massachusetts. Paul Ryan- Vice presidential candidate for the 2012 race

  9. Unfamiliar Diction Spurned- to scorn Antediluvian- old-fashioned, outdated, antiquated Cavorted- playfully coexist together Ratcheted up- to increase by degree in small increments Chauvinist- One who believes his/her gender is superior to the other

  10. Unfamiliar Diction Recidivist- clinging to the past, even when it’s not the best option Troglodyte- a deranged, prehistoric cave dweller Inanity- something that is senseless or silly Cant- phrases that have become repetitive

  11. Tone The article maintains a very sarcastic manner throughout. This can be seen through such quotes as “When you wish upon a rape” “…Oh, that’s ever so much better” when referencing that Todd Akin meant to say forcible rape She also mocks Akin by saying “that women have the superpower to repel rape sperm.”

  12. Tone The article also contains a condescending tone periodically. “…a bunch of male politicians shouldn’t be making health care decisions for women, this troglodyte tribe of men and Bachmann-esque women craves that responsibility.”

  13. Syntactic Schemes Polyptoton, parallelism, assonance, asyndeton “…antediluvian, anti-women, anti-immigrant, anti-gay conservative core.” Climaxes the intensity of her argument

  14. Structure of the Article Implicit thesis that appears throughout Small, easy-to-read paragraphs that assert her opinion on different, but all related, subjects She bashes on multiple political figures in nearly every paragraph, especially those who have drastically different views from her
