Europe: orgs and network infrastructure • Almost every country has a NREN • SEEREN project for southeastern Europe • Organizationally, mostly stable, no major changes • GEANT2 Network interconnects 34 countries • Organizationally, partnership of NRENs and DANTE • Mix of dark fiber and leased lines in backbone • Providing multiple networks on top of backbone infrastructure • High-performance IP Network • the GÉANT+ service • full wavelength (10Gbps) services • LHC OPN (GEANT2 backbone and NRENs) • EGEE-II and DEISA grid computing • NREN infrastructures • Mix of dark fiber, leased circuits, bought services • TERENA Compendium: http://www.terena.org/compendium

Europe, perf infrastructure, routing • GEANT2 and several NRENs have adopted perfSONARmeas.&mon. infrastructure - http://www.perfsonar.net/ • Routing aggregation • Even NRENs with their own circuits to US (SURFnet, CESnet) use GEANT2 for IP Network internationally • European-efforts to support, encourage regional aggregations elsewhere – ALICE->redCLARA, TEIN2, EUMEDCONNECT, UbuntuNet Alliance

Europe: access, identity management, applications infrastructure • National Identity Management Federations at national level • SWITCH (CH), FEIDE, UKFederation and others • Confederation at European level? EduGain • Seems to be rethinking of confederation vs. bilateral inter-federation • EduRoam – currently Radius-based, specific to permit network access on foreign campuses – ultimately utilize national federations? • Interesting services in v.c., voip, texting • JANET(UK) – JANETtxt, JANETtalk • TERENA Compendium summarizes a number of services

Middle East (and North Africa) • Mediterranean Middle East • Several NRENs off the ground, some established (e.g. Israel part of GEANT2) • EUMEDCONNECT project providing inter-national connectivity, routing aggregation • Not generally dark fiber-based, not providing more than IP Network • Saudi peninsula and Gulf states • Qatar Foundation connectivity for universities in Doha, with some other movement – UAE, Saudi Arabia • National telecom monopolies strong • North Africa • Several NRENs off the ground – largely connected internationally via EUMEDCONNECT • Egypt has additional connection to New York (MAN LAN) • National telecom monopolies strong

  17. Géant General Internet Ub-EU Connection to GEANT2 • Relatively short lived • Enable NRENs to connect NRENs using existing internet connections • Establish a router in Europe • Will involve NRENs/institutions in renumbering their IP addresses

  18. Central Asia • NRENs developed mostly motivated by SILK project • Established low-level satellite connectivity to a pop in each country • SILK-II increased bandwidth, better network management • Fiber coming to Caucuses, opportunities to Central Asia – cost remains key factor

South Asia • NREN organizations in Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, effort emerging in Bangladesh • Only current connectivity to global R&E fabric is India (45Mbps to GEANT2; 1G for 2xTier2 LHC sites to CERN) • Largely bought telecom services – although PERN (Pakistan) has ambitious plans for dark fiber connectivity between PoPs • TransPAC2 supplemental funding to support connection with PERN • TEIN3 2008 feasibility study – including extending to South Asia

  21. Southeast Asia • New-ish NRENs include Vietnam, Indonesia • Motivated in large part by TEIN2 project • TEIN2 primary provider of inter-connectivity within southeast Asia, to other parts of world • Mostly bought telecom services still, some lower-layer access (China)

  22. 9 Asian countries and Australia connected since 2006 • Serving 30M users in 3,800 institutions • Major uses include: • China/EU traffic • Tele-medecine • E-learning programmes • Strong co-operation between partners

East Asia and Pacific • More R&E networks have access to lower layer infrastructure – Australia, China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea(?) • Building multiple networks/services on these infrastructures • Application-specific and dynamic circuit services • CERNET (CN) deploying perfSONAR-like system of monitoring/measurement • Trials in Japan, Korea, but not yet full deployment • Regional aggregation in routing has increased somewhat (mostly TEIN2), but still see multiple individual IP Network links to rest of world

  24. East Asia and Pacific • Trust federations forming in Australia, Japan, some interest in China • eduRoam popular service for NRENs in Asia • AARNET (AU) has extensive voip, video applications infrastructure/services • CERNET (CN) deployment of DVTS video in 25 sites – stimulate v6 usage

South America (and other parts of North America) • Mexico, central and south America – most NRENs now established • Motivated by first AMPATH project and the redCLARA continental backbone • Outside of Brazil, maybe Chile, current access to lower layers is limited • NRENs and redCLARA providing dedicated IP Networks • Brazil exploring dedicated circuit-type services • Astronomers and their facilities are key community-specific customers – redCLARA connectivity dedicated to astronomers in Chile • RNP (BR) is key partner in perfSONAR development –anticipate deployment in Brazil and perhaps redCLARA

Canada • New CANARIE infrastructure • Mix of 72 wavelength ROADM network and purchased services • Also ORAN infrastructure • IP Network and UCLP-based topology-specific network capabilities • CANARIE Network Enabled Platforms • VO-based efforts to assemble pieces of cyberinfrastructure to support different disciplines - http://www.canarie.ca/conferences/platforms/info.html

  27. Caribbean • Limited ‘national’ R&E network organizations/activity • University and research institution interest • Universities in Puerto Rico connected • University of the US Virgin Islands real soon now (via FIU) • Connectivity potential via CKLN initiative • redCLARA, AMPATH linkages

  28. Antarctica • Several stations/research sites with satellite access • Interest from Kongsberg in downlink connection to Internet2 network in New York • USAP connectivity via Colorado to Internet2 • NASA links
