How Is Child Abuseand neglect defined by federal law • Child Abuse • The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA),(42 U.S.C.A. 5106g • Defines child abuse and neglect at a minimum • “Of any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm sexual abuse or exploitation” • “or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm” • Child Welfare Information Gateway (2008)

In the Journal of Aggression Maltreatment and Trauma • Many studies have been done on child abuse • but none as intense as the studies that were done in • the Journal of Aggression Maltreatment Trauma. • When the authors made their findings they were able to list ten different symptoms ranging from depression to learning disorders that child abuse inflicts on its victims
