Introduction Li Ka-shing, now 82 years old, nickname “superman”, is the 11th richest person in the world 2011 according to Forbes Magazine with estimated US$26 billion. He is currently the chairman of Hutchison Whampoa Limited and Cheung Kong Holdings. Considered as the most powerful person in Hong Kong and probably in Asia.
Background • Born in Guangdong, China in 1928 in a middle class family • In 1940, he followed his family moved to Hong Kong • his father died and left him the responsibility to take care of his family when he was 15. • Started his own business in 1950, a plastic flower manufactory.
In 1958 when his landlord raised its rent, He had enough cash to purchase his factoryand it became his first investment in real estate. • By 1960s, Cheung Kong had transformed into a property development and management company. • The company, renamed Cheung Kong Holdings in 1971, had its initial public offering in 1972. By 1979 Li was Hong Kong's largest private landlord.
