Why DRR in education ? • Save lives and prevent injuries • 175 million children and youth are likely to be affected by climate-related disasters each year. • One billion children are living in areas considered at high seismic risk. “What people know is more important than what they have when it comes to saving lives and reducing loss” • Prevent interruption of the provision of education • School enrolment may decline among the most vulnerable • Quality of education may also be impaired • Half a million children are displaced from school every year due to flooding alone • School building and teaching materials destroyed • Develop resilient population and reduce impact of disaster on economic, social, environmental and cultural spheres

  3. School safety components • DRR planning and management for education sector preparedness and responses • The provision of safe school environments : Safe school building and facilities • Integrated DRR awareness and knowledge into the provision of education - disaster prevention education

ESD and DRR Education for Sustainable Development offers a vision and tools that are well placed to provide strong support to “ building a culture of safety and resilience at all levels”; TheHyogo Framework for Action explicitly calls for the “integration of disaster risk reduction as an intrinsic element of the DESD .”

UNESCO supports countries to: Include DRR in school curricula; build the capacity of teacher education institutions and community educators in DRR; develop disaster school management plans; provide a country case-study and develop a follow-up plan. Promote regional networking and knowledge-sharing on DRR education Advocates for DRR education at international policy level Provides capacity building on DRR of education planners and practitioners • UNESCO/ESD work in DRR education

  6. A project with UNICEF which runs in 2 phases: A comprehensive mapping study (in 30 countries) that captured key national experiences and good practices with regards to integration of DRR in school curricula. The technical guidelines provides policy-makers and curriculum developers in governments, NGOs and UN agencies with guidance on how to introduce DRR into education sector policies, curricula and assessment.
