  7. You have identified many different interpretations of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. There are also many different interpretations of the American West: DIFFERENT AMERICAN WESTS, 1840-1900. What is the American west?

  8. Old Western Interpretation: Native Americans caused a problem by occupying land in the West. The ‘Indian Problem’ required removal. New Western Interpretation: Native Americans were lied to and were subdued by the aggressive army of a racially motivated American government. Micro-histories: some historians have focused on specific case studies e.g. The Battle of the Little Bighorn, rather than the American West as a whole. Interpretations of Native American and white American conflict: So what is the consensus today?
