  2. Alas: • (Interjection)Expression used to show sorrow or sadness Ex: Marie wanted to go to NYU, but alas, her grades weren’t high enough to get in.

  3. Upland: • (noun) Land at high elevation Ex: Casey was exhausted by the time she finally finished climbing the mountains of Montana’s upland.

  4. Slope: • (Noun)Land slanted up or down, as in mountain slope Ex: Juan laughed as his sister tried climbing up the sharply slanting mountain slope in her skis.

  5. Chalice: • (Noun) Cup or goblet, sometimes made of gold Ex: The princess drank the frothy potion from the chalice the witch had given her, and immediately fell into a magical sleep.

  6. Perch: • (Noun) Roost for a bird, such as a branch Ex: The pretty little birdie flew onto the tree branch outside my window, and settled comfortably on it’s perch.

  7. Fain: • (Adv.) Rather; preferably Ex: Bella would fain love Edward than Jacob.

  8. Bough: • (Noun) Small branch of a tree; limb Ex: Sandra added one last ornament to the last empty bough of the Christmas tree, and the decorating was complete.

  9. Throb: • (Verb) Beat; pulse; thump Ex: Dan and Mary heard the throbbing sound of their baby’s heartbeat during the ultrasound.
