HEADPHONES WHILE DRIVING… IS IT SAFE?

One of the most common ways people sustain a personal injury is to be involved in a car wreck. It will most likely happen to all of us at least once in our lifetime, but there are steps you can take to avoid dangerous accidents. We’ve all heard about “distracted driving” and we usually associate this with texting while operating a car or truck. Driving while distracted is one of the leading causes of car and truck wrecks in Tennessee (and nationwide), mainly because there are a great number of actions that would be categorized as “distracted driving”. Sure, texting or talking on the phone would count, but one thing you may not have thought of would be listening to headphones or earbuds while you are behind the wheel.<br>

  1. HEADPHONES WHILE DRIVING… IS IT SAFE?

  2. Sure, texting or talking on the phone would count, but one thing you may not have thought of would be listening to headphones or earbuds while you are behind the wheel.

  3. More and more drivers are out on the road listening to music while wearing headphones. Some drivers use these devices for phone conversations via Bluetooth as it allows them to keep their eyes on the road. In most states, listening to these devices while driving is not illegal… but is it smart? Consider how important your senses are while driving. Being able to see is obviously necessary, but being able to hear, while less important (and certainly many people who are hard of hearing are outstanding drivers and do so safely), is helpful to keeping you as safe as possible when behind the wheel.

  4. Being able to hear honking of the horns of other vehicles, train horns, emergency sirens from oncoming ambulances, police, or fire trucks, and a number of other audible warnings is crucial when driving. Being able to hear the sound of an approaching vehicle may prevent you from having a serious car wreck and sustaining a life-altering personal injury. If you must wear earbuds or headphones while driving, one possible compromise would be to wear the device only in (or over) one of your ears. This allows you to enjoy the music or carry on your conversation, but still have one ear available to listen for sirens, horns, and other sounds from your environment.

  5. If you or someone you love has been injured in an accident due to someone else wearing one of these devices while driving a car or truck, we would encourage you to contact a professional personal injury attorney in your area for a free consultation.
