  2. What isoutput? • Data that has been processed into a useful form, called information • Output device is any hardware component that can convey information to user Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  3. What Is An Output Device? • Any type of hardware component that conveys information to one or more people. • Output devices present information in a human readable (or sound) form.

  4. What is adisplay device? • Output device that visually conveys information • Information on a display device is often called soft copy • Monitorhouses display device as separate peripheral • Flat panel monitors • LCD • Plasma • Widescreen Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  5. What is aflat panel monitor? • Can use a liquid crystal • Also called LCDmonitor • Can use a gas • Plasma monitor • Takes up less desk space than older CRT monitors • Consumes less thanone-third the power Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS LCD or Plasma

  6. Containscathode-ray tube(CRT) • What is aCRTmonitor? • Screen coated with tiny dots of phosphor material • Each dot consists of a red, blue, and green phosphor • Common sizes are 15, 17, 19, 21, and 22 inches • Viewable sizeis diagonal measurement of actual viewing area • This is how all monitors & TVs are measured Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  7. What is a Liquid Crystal Display? • LCD uses a liquid compound to present information on a display device The best image quality with a wide viewing angle.

  8. How does LCD work? Transparent electrodes Alignment layer Color filter Polarizing glass filter Fluorescent tube panel • Uses liquid compound to present information on screen Step 2. As light passes through liquid crystal, electrical charge causes some of the cells to twist, making light waves bend as they pass through color filter. Step 1.Panel of fluorescent tubes emits light waves through polarizing glass filter, which guides light toward layer of liquid crystal cells. Step 3.When light reaches second polarizing glass filter, light is allowed to pass through any cells that line up at the first polarizing glass filter. Absence and presence of colored light cause image to display on the screen. Liquid crystal cells Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  9. What affects flat panel image quality? • The screen display quality depends primarily on:

  10. Sharpness and clarity of image • What isresolution? • Number of horizontal and vertical pixels in a display device • Higher resolution makes image sharper, displays more text on screen, but makes some elements smaller • Refresh rate is speed at which monitor redrawsimages on screen Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  11. What is the graphics processing unit? • The GPU controls the manipulation and display of graphics on a display device. The GPU is on a digital video graphics card. The computer, card and flat panel monitor are now all digital. • LCD monitors use a digital signal and should plug into a DVI port, and HDMI port, or a DisplayPort This is a digital video graphics card. Older video cards converted a digital signal into an analog (CRT) signal.

  12. What is Digital Television? • DTV offers a crisper, higher-quality output • HDTV is the most advanced form of digital television

  13. Notebooks • Tablet PCs • PDAs • Smart phones • What are some mobile devices that have LCD screens? Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  14. Displays image by applying voltage to layer of gas • Larger screen size and richer colors than LCD, but are more expensive • What is aplasma monitor? Click monitor to view video

  15. What is theENERGY STAR®program? • Encourages manufacturers to create energy-efficient devices that require little electricity when not in use • Monitors and devices meeting the guidelines may display ENERGY STAR label Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  16. Portrait Landscape • What is aprinter? • Output device that produces text and graphics on paper • Result ishard copy, orprintout • Two orientations:portraitandlandscape Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  17. What is a Nonimpact Printer? • Characters and graphics are formed on a piece of paper without actually striking the paper

  18. How do you know which printer to buy? • Depends on printing needs Budget Speed Color orblack and white Cost per page Graphicscapability Photo printing Paper typesand sizes Systemcompatibility Future needs Wirelesscapability Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  19. What is aInk-jetprinter? • Aprinter that spraystiny drops of liquid ink onto paper • Prints in black-and-white or color on a variety of paper types • Printers with a higher dpi (dots per inch) produce a higher quality output

  20. print cartridge nozzle print head firing chamber resistor ink dot nozzle ink ink bubble paper Hundreds of nozzles propel ink in any combination to form characters on the paper. • How does an ink-jet printer work? Step 1.A small resistor heats the ink, causing the ink to boil and form a vapor bubble. Step 2.The vapor bubble forces the ink through the nozzle. Step 3.Ink drops onto the paper. Step 4.As the vapor bubble collapses, fresh ink is drawn into the firing chamber. Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  21. Color printer that produces photo-lab-quality pictures • Many photo printers have a built-in card slot • PictBridge is a standard technology that allows you to print pictures directly from a digital camera • What is aphoto printer? Click to view video Computer Art

  22. What is alaserprinter? • High-speed, high-quality nonimpact printer • Prints text and graphics in very high-quality resolution, ranging from 600 to 2,400 dpi • Typically costs more than ink-jet printer, but is much faster • Ink lasts longer than ink-jet printers Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  23. How does a laser printer work? Step 2.Rotating mirror deflects low-powered laser beam across surface of drum. Step 1.After user sends an instruction to print a document, drum rotates as gears and rollers feed sheet of paper into printer. Step 5.Set of rollers uses heat and pressure to permanently fuse toner to paper. Step 4.As drum continues to rotate and press against paper, toner transfers from drum to paper. Step 3.Laser beam creates a charge that causes toner to stick to drum. Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  24. home use professional • What is athermal printer? • Generates images by pushing electrically heated pins against heat-sensitive paper • Dye-sublimation printer, (also called a digital photo printer) uses heat to transfer dye to specially coated paper Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  25. What is aportableprinter? • Small, lightweight, battery-powered printer that allows mobile user to print from notebook computer, Tablet PC, or PDA while traveling Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  26. What is alabelprinter? • Small printer that prints on adhesive-type material • Most also print bar codes • Postage printerhas built-in digital scale and printspostage stamps Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  27. Architects & Engineers use plotters for large print jobs; blueprints & schematics • What is aplotter? • Sophisticated printer used to produce high-quality drawings • Large-format printercreates photo-realistic-quality color prints Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  28. What iswirelessprinting? • Output transmitted to printer wirelessly via infraredlight waves or radio waves • BluetoothTMprinting uses radio waves • Devices need to be within 30-foot range Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  29. What is an Impact Printer? • Characters and graphics are formed on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked ribbon that physically contacts (strikes) the paper

  30. What is adot-matrixprinter? • An impact printer that produces printed images when tiny wire pins strike ribbon • A line printer prints an entire line at a time Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS

  31. subwoofer speakers • What is anaudiooutput device? • Computer component that produces music, speech, or other sounds • Speakers, headsets & earbuds are common devices Levi Krein Associate Professor CIS
