What are they? Vertebrates are- • Chordates with backbones • Chordates are fewer than 5% of the animal species. They are commonly known as Phylum Chordata
What makes a vertebrate • Basic Chordate body plan • Long stiff notochord or vertebral column • Long hollow tube of tissue called a spinal cord • Mouth is normally located at the anterior end whilst the anus is at the exterior end. • At one point or another had a tail • Pharyngeal pouches that may develop into gills or lungs.
Evolution of Vertebrates • Vertebrates have been traced back 525 million years ago. • The first vertebrate was the Myllokunmingia • Some vertebrates that evolved without jaws are Hag fishes and lampreys • Most of the dinosaurs war vertebrates
Types of Vertebrates • Birds • Reptiles • Amphibians • Mammals • Fish
Birds • Birds have developed their vertebrate skeleton for flight. • Thinner bones and wings for flight.
Reptiles • Reptiles have Developed their skeletons for many uses like swimming or moving about the ground
Amphibians • Amphibians have developed their vertebrate skeletons so that they may move about the ground and swim in the water.
Mammals • There are many types of mammals; primates, dolphins, whales ect.
Fish • Fish have developed their vertebrate skeletons so that they may move through the water at high speeds.
