  3. Parental Example Linked to Offspring’s Lasting Faith “NEW YORK – Parents who want their children to keep the faith would do well to lead by example, research shows. “In a study of college students in the United States and Canada, sociologists at the University of Calgary found that young people were more likely to keep their religious beliefs if they attended church at age 10 and first experienced doubts later in their teen-age years. “…`Church is not going to overcome parents, and it’s probably the religiosity of the family (that is) as important or more important than anything the church does as an institution,’ (Sociologist David) Roozen said.” (David Briggs, AP, The Stars and Stripes, 5/15/93, p. 11)

  4. Insurance: Parents set example by financial behavior “In addition to physical traits and family values, our children also inherit something that most parents don't realize - our financial behavior. “A new survey that looks at American's financial behaviors reports that many parents overlook this important responsibility and, as a result, may be passing on poor money management skills to their children. "…`Children watch their parents in many environments, including those involving spending and saving.’" (John S. Denton, posted 9/1/02, http://www.amarillonet.com/stories/090102/bus_bj090102-17.shtml)

  5. To Avoid Setting Bad Example, Parents Need to Quit Early “Smoking parents who don't want their kids to grow up addicted to nicotine need to quit when their children are still young, new research suggests.“Reuters Health reported May 9 that when parents quit smoking before their children turn age 8, the likelihood that their children will become smokers themselves decreases. Kids whose parents quit early were 39 percent less likely to become smokers by age 17 or 18, according to study author Jonathan B. Bricker of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Wash.“Smoking in front of children can have both physical and psychological effects that influence future behavior, Bricker said. `By parents quitting smoking, they are not only protecting their children from the health hazards of secondhand smoke, but they are also preventing the children from becoming smokers themselves,’ he said.” (5/14/2003http://www.jointogether.org/sa/news/summaries/reader/0,1854,563276,00.html)

  7. “The Parents Television Council reported last week that the incidence of prime-time sex, violence and foul language tripled over the past decade. The Center for Media and Public Affairs reported that broadcast TV programs last season averaged 22 sexual situations every hour; basic cable channels, 12 per hour; premium cable, 45 per hour; and music videos 93 per hour.” (via "The Advocate", Baton Rouge, LA, 4/7/2000, via Greg Gwin, The Beacon - Electronic Edition - 7/18/00)

  8. “Recent Census and survey results reveal a virtual breakdown of traditional moral values within the United States. The nuclear family consisting of a married father and mother with children in the home now comprises only 25% of the family units in this country. Moreover, couples cohabiting without marriage have escalated over 70% in just the last decade. “Furthermore, a recent Gallup poll found that the moral decline of America is now almost complete. According to Gallup, only 38% of the American people believe that sex before marriage is wrong. Sixty percent said fornication poses no problems with them. Even more disturbing is the fact that almost 70% of those under thirty think

  9. premarital sex is acceptable. A scant 28% of all age groups feel it is unacceptable. These kinds of numbers are staggering! It appears America has lost its moral conscience. “The cultural collapse of our country has even taken its toll upon the last vanguard of traditional ethics: the military. For example, an independent legal commission, comprised of former military lawyers and judges, is recommending the military strike anti-sodomy and adultery laws from the Uniform Code of Military Justice. It would seem that illicit sexual activity is so fashionable these days that they simply want to make it official.” (“Nuclear Family in Total Meltdown,” by Chuck Baldwin 6/5/01, http://www.chuckbaldwinlive.com)
