  2. SUFFIXES • -asthenia weakness, lack of strength • -centesis surgical puncture to remove fluid • -cide causing death • -malacia softening • -mortem death • -stasis halt, stoppage, maintaining a constant level

  3. Suffix Examples • myasthenia—muscle weakness • thoracentesis—surgical puncture of the chest to remove fluids • bactericide—agent that causes the death of bacteria • osteomalacia—softening of bone • antemortem—before death • hemostasis—stoppage of bleeding

  4. PREFIXES • ante- before • post- after, behind • hemi- half (one side) • inter- between, among • intra- within, into, inside

  5. Prefix Examples • antemortem—before death • postmortem—after death • hemiplegia—paralysis of one side of body • intercostal—pertaining to between ribs • intramuscular—within muscle

  6. ABBREVIATIONS • BP blood pressure • VS vital signs • TPR temperature, pulse and respirations • Rx prescription • BR bed rest • SOB shortness of breath
