  1. Detector Cooling Project III Thermosiphon Workshop-Introduction to the workshop M. Battistin (EN/CV/DC)28th May 2010

  2. Welcome to the third workshop on Thermosiphon • After more than one year of activity on this project achieved steps: • TS WI: describe the main lines of the project • TS WII: assess the feasibility and obtain resources for mini-thermosiphon and full scale thermosiphon bench test • TS WIII: shows first results form mini-thermosiphon and launch the engineering phase of ATLAS ID cooling refurbishment project to comply with the 2012 installation planning

  3. Index • Advancement of sonar fluorocarbon mixture analyzer for C2F6/C3F8 evaporative cooling development • Results from the Mini-Thermosiphon tests • Status of the PX15 thermosiphon project • Seismic calculation for the PX15 piping • System integration in PX15  • Thermosiphon control system • Test plan for the PX15 thermosiphon • Issues related to the 60 kW installation scale up and blends management • Low temperature chillers Market Survey MS-3684/EN/ATLAS • Thermosiphon solution for Alice SPD cooling system • Back-up solutions to the ATLAS ID Thermosiphon: centrifugal compressors • Conclusions

  4. Status of the cooling system • ATLAS ID Evaporative cooling station is running in this very moment. We cannot forget: • The important failure of 3 compressors on May the 1st 2008. • The fatigue problem observed on autumn 2008 • The cylinder suction valve problem on 14th February 2010. • …this is not a reliable system! • The alternative solution shall be: • Reliable • Clean: wear of components obliges to an important filtering process • Leak-tight: developing with time due (in part) to vibrations • Oil free • Able to manage mixtures (C3F8-C2F6) 15th April 2010

  5. Main streams of investigation • Since the compressor refurbishment executed during spring 2009 we decided to not invest on Haug compressors any longer and study alternative solutions. Two main streams of study has been defined: • No compressors: thermosiphon project • Alternative compressors (screw, labyrinth, membrane, centrifugal): finally the centrifugal magnetic bearing oil free compressor has been identified as very good candidate (Turbocor – McQuay) • Oil free gas bearing centrifugal compressor is a very new investigation line we are opening now. It is premature to give details.

  6. 2009 2010 2011 Mini thermosiphon Bdg 191 – 10 k€ Blends studies on mini thermosiphon Thermosiphon PX15 – 200 kCHF Procurement & installation Validation Market Survey + Invitation to Tender for low temperature chiller – 2 MCHF Perfluorocarbon Blends cooling test in SR1 and PX15 Turbocor purchase and installation phase TURBOCOR tests Validation PX15 piping installation Design and procurement for the final solution installation in 2012

  7. Resources needed • Jan Godlewki • DaniloGiugni • Michele Battistin • Are following the all process part time • Elena Perez • Jose Direito • Have this activity as first priority and dedicate to this at least 50% of their time. Elena Perez up to Jan 2011. Jose Direito fellowship starts Sep 2010. • Alex Bitadze • Lukasz Zwalinski • Delio Ramon • Are following this project part time. • Stephane Berry • Pierre Bonneau • Pierre Feraudet • Olivier Crespo • Florian Corbaz • Daniel Lefils • They all are contributing to the projects providing technical support for mechanical, electrical, control aspects in parallel to the daily operation and maintenance activity of the section. • New resources shall be dedicated to these projects • (Oil free compressor + thermosiphon)
