  2. Today’s Objective • Students should be able to support an assigned position based on a specific perspective, using researched facts from online sources, on Edgar Allan Poe’s mysterious death.

Today we will be researching the mysterious circumstances behind the death of a local writing legend, Edgar Allan Poe. • We will give you a basic history of his life and work and then give you reigns to research on your own. • Then you will need to draw off of this information to write about his death in an assigned persona. Have fun with it!

Edgar Allen Poe’s Life • Born: January 19, 1809 • Born in Boston, Massachusetts • His parents separated. • 1811-mother dies • Taken in by John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. • He was raised in wealth, partially in Virginia and also in England. • His name comes from his birth parents, as well as the Allen’s. Edgar AllenPoe. • Attended the University of Virginia for a short period of time. • 1835- married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year old cousin.

Last time at Ryan’s Tavern • Traveled by train from Richmond, Virginia to Baltimore on September 28. • October 3, 1849 Poe was found outside of Ryan’s Tavern in Baltimore in a great distress and delirious. • He was put in Washington College Hospital where he suffered from tremors and hallucinations. • He died early on the morning of October 7,1849.
