  3. Developed in the 1980’s, the DECtalk was/is a speech synthesizer and text to speech technology. • It is normally used as an assistive technology for those unable to speak. • According to Mr. Hawking, although this is outdated technology, he used the DTC01 for so long because he identified with it and had not heard a voice he liked better. • Along with the DECtalk, he also used a wheelchair. 4. In conjunction with the DECtalk, the wheelchair is what Mr. Hawking used for mobilization. • Because of his disease, he needs a wheelchair for ambulation since his muscles do not function properly. • Attached to his wheelchair is his DECtalk so he can communicate and travel around at the same time. 5. -Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) is a neuromuscular disease characterized by the degeneration of one’s motor neurons. Once one is diagnosed with the disease, there is a gradual weakening of the muscles and usually results in death. -Although SMA can result in death during childhood, many people with SMA survive into adulthood and even old age. Actual lifespan depends very much on the severity of SMA in each individual. Spinal Muscular Atrophy More Info

  6. Individuals with SMA are living longer and fuller lives with the help of assistive technology such as ventilators, power wheelchairs, and modified access to computers. • Due to molecular biology, there is a better understanding of SMA. Many experimental treatments are being tested, including gene replacement, stem-cell replacement of motor neurons, and most promising therapies intended to increase the expression of the SMN 2 gene. 7. -Stephen Hawking (January 8, 1942) is a British physicist and mathematician who has made essential contributions to the science of cosmology—the study of the origins, structure, and space-time relationships of the universe. -Mr. Hawking is also the author of a popular science book called A Brief History of Time, which was a bestseller and was on the British Sunday Times bestseller list for a record breaking 237 weeks. 8. -After receiving his B.A. degree at Oxford University in 1962, he stayed to study astronomy. -He left Oxford for Trinity Hall, Cambridge, where he began his study of theoretical astronomy and cosmology(which is eventually what he became known for). -Mr. Hawking was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge for thirty years, taking the job in 1979 and retiring on October 1, 2009.
