  1. Emmanuel Melendez Visual Interpretation of Poetry February 21,2011 R.J. Lambert

  2. “Disillusionment of Ten O’Clock” Author:Wallace Stevens The houses are haunted By white night-gowns. None are green, Or purple with green rings, Or green with yellow rings, None of them are strange, With socks of lace And beaded ceintures. People are not going, To dream of baboons and periwinkles. Only, here and there, an old sailor, Drunk and asleep in his boots, Catches tigers In red weather. People who wear white night gowns are like ghost entering in and out of their houses. Like dead men for their life they have completely los meaning. “Green” is the meaning of alive. The people don’t want to be any different from others. Not taking any risks. They are afraid of danger. “Baboons and Periwinkles” symbolizes something different they don’t see on a daily basis which would be an adventure to dream about. “Old Sailor” meaning the opposite of the men with white night gowns. Careless person, which means that since he does not care he is not afraid of taking any risks and has probably seen “Baboons and Periwinkles”

  3. The poem is mostly divided in two different parts, but the whole poem is based on the meaning of dreaming. The first part is about how some people are so dead and lose meaning of their lives. They don’t want to be any different from everyone else. The men people with the white night-gowns are so afraid of even dreaming and taking any kind of risk. The second part is talking about the drunken sailor who is so careless and rich in life experience that he can dream of anything special that he would want. The sailor is meaning on how people don’t have to be afraid of any risk and take things how they come and from there dreaming will be wonderful. Brief Analysis
