Becoming an international lawyer - Hong Kong Solicitor 1st year (Sept 2012 – Jun 2013) GDL course in England Pass all the *Hong Kong PCLL conversion exams on or before June 2013 2nd year (Sept 2013 – Jun 2014) PCLL course in Hong Kong 3rd & 4th years (Sept 2014 – Aug 2016) • Trainee solicitorship with Herbert Smith, 4 six-month seats, Salaried at international levels • Usually: • 2 seats in Hong Kong, 1 seat in London, • 1 seat in mainland leading to qualification as a Hong Kong solicitor

The Hong Kong PCLL Conversion Examinations (1) Conversion Examinations will be offered twice a year, January and June, in the following subjects: • Core subjects: Civil Procedure Criminal Procedure Commercial Law Evidence Business Associations • Top-up subjects: Hong Kong Constitutional Law Hong Kong Legal System Hong Kong Land Law We expect students to sit at least 2 conversion exams in June 2012, January 2013 and/or June 2013 to pass all eight subjects. Deadline for application to sit the June 2012 Conversion Examination: 15 April 2012

  11. Scholarship benefits (1) • Stage 1 - GDL • Payment of all GDL fees • Monthly grant of £300 during GDL course (10 months) • Return air ticket to the UK • Funding of accommodation with meals (cost approx. £4,500) • Allowances: £500 start-up (cash) + £500 book expenses (against receipts)

  12. Scholarship benefits (2) • Stage 2 – PCLL • Financial Assistance on preparing the PCLL conversion exams. Return flight tickets to Hong Kong Accommodation in Hong Kong PCLL examination fees Study Materials • Payment of all PCLL course fees • Monthly grant of HK$7,500 during PCLL (10 months)

Scholarship benefits (3) • Stage 3 – Training Contract • Salary – paid at same rate as all other Hong Kong trainees • As at September 2011, salaries for trainees are: • HK$45,000 (monthly salary for year one) rising to HK$47,000 (monthly salary for year two) Holiday • 22 days paid holiday per year (plus local public holidays) Medical, Life insurance & Disability Income Protection

  14. Scholarship benefits (4) • Stage 4 – Post-qualification Salary – paid on same basis as other solicitors of equivalent seniority with variations based solely on performance. Holiday - 27 days paid holiday per year (plus local public holidays) Structured Training Program Medical, Life & Disability Income Protection insurances Notes: Qualified solicitors are known within Herbert Smith as “associates”. Associates qualify into a particular specialist practice area. Associate secondments to clients or between offices are common.
