GaN is a mechanically stable, wide-bandgap semiconductor material with a high heat capacity and thermal conductivity. Despite the discrepancy in their lattice constants, it may be formed in thin layer on sapphire or silicon carbide in its pure state.GaN may be doped with silicon (Si) or oxygen to become n-type and magnesium (Mg) to become p-type. The Si and Mg atoms, on the other hand, alter the way GaN crystals develop, adding tensile stresses and making them brittle. Gallium nitride compounds have a high dislocation density as well. The structural, mechanical, thermal, and chemical characteristics of gallium nitride (GaN) epitaxy substrates are collated, and the properties of GaN films formed on these substrates are examined. GaN is unique among semiconductors; most of its applications involve thin GaN films produced on foreign substrates (materials other than GaN), i.e. heteroepitaxial thin films.
