  2. Eco U • Legal trademark of UWGB • Dubbed “Eco U” by Harper’s Magazine, Newsweek and other national and regional media in the early 1970s • Need to live up to this name through sustainability focused decision making

  3. Sustainability • A term that is often debated and loosely defined • The Brundtland Report of 1987 (aka Our Common Future) produced a common definition of sustainability • The ability to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs • Economy and society should be bound by the natural environment Scott Cato, M. Goals at the Residence Halls • Reduce energy use, water consumption, and waste production • Increase reduction, reuse, and recycling of materials • Encourage and promote a sustainable environment for all residents through programs and educational opportunities • Receive feedback from residents to improve the sustainable culture at the resident halls

  5. Reducing Water Consumption • Shorter showers • Full loads of laundry • Turn the faucet off when brushing your teeth • Turn the faucet off when drying dishes • Report leaks to maintenance

  7. Reducing Energy Demand • Use a power strip • Easy to turn many appliances off at once • Turn appliances off and unplug when not in use • Especially small electronics like printers • Adjust your computer sleep mode • Don’t leave cell phones plugged in • Remember to turn lights off • Use natural lighting during the day • Turn the bathroom fan off

  8. Essential Items • Reusable water bottle, coffee mug, etc. • Tote bags • Binders • Not notebooks

  9. Replace Disposables • Get rid of disposable razors and switch to a reusable variety • Battery charger • Use reusable cups and plates • Paper plates have a large negative environmental impact • Kitchens are available in the resident halls to wash dishes

  10. Heating and Cooling • Open the windows in the summer instead of air-conditioning • Use a fan • Close the windows when the heat is on

  11. Printing • Print double-sided • Make it your default setting • Download articles from the library (and Illiad) instead of printing • Submit homework electronically when available • Ask yourself if it really needs to be printed

  12. Recycling and Waste • Always decide whether you have refuse or recyclables • Reduce, reuse, recycle • Many recycling stations around campus for… • Ink cartridges and toner packs • Cell phones • Brown County recycling information

  13. Transportation • Green Bay transit system • U-Pass agreement • Free to all students • Transit system map • Full ServiceLimited Service • Zimride • Private ridesharing network for UWGB • Remember this option as you move off campus in the future

  14. Shopping • Go to thrift stores or consignment stores • Choose products with less packaging • If possible, buy “green” products (i.e. cleaning products) • Use a community garden to save money on groceries • Visit a farmers market to shop for locally grown foods • Remember to bring your tote bags!
