Today’s goals: • Key concepts heard yesterday • Implications and discussion • Take-away ideas
Setting the context: Map of Future Forces www.kwfdn.org/map • Trends, Hotspots, Dilemmas • Changing Demogaphics: • - TeacherAttrition and Retirement • - Generational Differences
How does all this apply to you? • In utilizing retirees, they may know content but not how to “do school” – implications for cross-generational staffing • Value of (need to) connecting with peers and mentors – ending the isolation at all levels (admin and classroom) • Need to deal with the retention/retirement conundrum – and support/grow those who stay • Challenge of creative staffing models …when staffing is “locked in”
….contd • PD and support needs to be driven by team- oriented focus on relevant issues • Effective Teaming – sharing, observing, troubleshooting together (eg, sharing of best practices from last night’s Olympics so everyone improves/learns) – value of multiple and cross-teaming – student-need orientation – needs to be effective (nothing magical about simply being called a “team”) – role of a team leader – setting an agenda – importance of trust • Open the doors of the classrooms!
…contd • Harness media-rich learning potential • Limited online access – acceptable? No! – must prepare students for today’s world. • Need to aggressively seek solutions, make noise • Digital immigrant teachers • One possible soln with limited access: special class for all -- project-based learning – cross-curricular -- utilizing technology. • Not just a school or district issue to address. Need changes in State policies – to embrace/enable 21st learning (distance, GED vs diploma, 4-year requirements, etc)
Given this lens, what will you do now as next steps? • Enable broader use of technology in my building (change policies and increase availability) • Push state/county leadership to enable and guide “changes” that need to be made for 21st century learning • Enable more effective teaming (including online)
