  11. Submarines are ideal underway survey platforms in the Arctic • Independent of the ice canopy • Stable, quiet, and maneuverable • More miles per day (> 4x) than surface ships • Reconnaissance sonar survey more efficient (> 7X ) than surface ships

  14. Ice Draft Measurements (1) • Historical archive of 637 DIPS data • New submarines have different sonars • Cross calibration is required • Improved (Swath) Options: • Mature (seafloor technology) • Significantly improved spatial coverage • Adds spatial distribution and texture

  15. Ice Draft Measurements (2) • The trans-arctic track is parallel to the slope of the thickness gradient • Small errors in navigation, season or ice draft confound the observations • Add a cross track line to submarine cruises
