  2. What are we going to do today? • Business • Review Ford, “Accommodations” • Class Discussion • Class Activity • Homework /Questions

  3. Business • Homework? • Questions about the Blackboard site? • Trouble finding the readings? • Trouble with the E-Book? • Other issues?

  4. “Accommodations” • From the 1988 issue of Trips, a travel magazine in San Francisco. • What kind of audience does Ford cater to? • What constitutes his rhetorical situation? • “This was the fifties, and my grandfather ran the hotel where we lived—in Little Rock, a town neither exactly south nor exactly west, just as it still is” (41). • Who does the above statement target?

  5. “Accommodations” • Ethos, Pathos, and Logos (E-Handbook, Chapter 21) • Logos, the appeal to reason / evidence and examples • Pathos, the appeal to emotion, values, and beliefs • Ethos, the appeal to the credibility of the speaker or writer with an image of yourself, a persona, that encourages readers to accept or act on your ideas • What kind of appeal does Ford make in this quote: • “To make regular life seem regular need not always be to bleach the strong colors out. But just for a time it can help. When you look for what’s unique and also true of life, you’re lucky to find less than you imagined” (43).

  6. “Accommodations” • Name the appeal: • “And what I thought about it was this: this is the actual life now, not a stopover, a diversion, or an oddment in time, but the permanent life, the one that will provide history, memory, the one I’ll be responsible for in the long run. Everything counts, after all. What else do you need to know?” What about exigence? What’s Ford trying to do?

  7. “Accommodations” • Other thoughts about the text? Can you see how this creative work appeals to the reader, acknowledges the rhetorical situation, and conforms to exigence?

  8. Class Activity • What is the one thing that everyone loves? • Peanut Butter? • Orange Juice? • Cows? • Dogs?

  9. The Exigence “All Pandas should be killed to divert funds from wildlife rescue programs to subsidize oil costs.” How does this make you feel?

  10. Choose Your Weapon! • Get into three groups. • Ethos • Pathos • Logos • It is time to battle ARISTOTLE STYLE 

  11. Choose your champion VS

  12. The Rules • Each group will respond to the anti-panda establishment using their rhetorical appeal. • One group will present a champion or a devil’s advocate • The Caesar will decide the winner (weak appeals lose) • Winning champion’s group goes to next round until defeated.

  13. Why don’t you love me?

  14. And the Winner is…..

  15. Homework • Homework: • Continue Working on Project 1 Proposal • Review: • Ford, “Accommodations” • We are going to talk more about Ford and cultures, subcultures, and families.
