  1. 1 John 3:19-22 (NASB) We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God;and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. Resting in Love

  2. HHBC--1 John Elective Quick Recap 19a We will know by this that we are of the truth, What is “this”? Love only exists in Christ. We will exhibit love only as we abide in Christ. Love manifests itself outward, toward our brethren. The key (as always) is position.

  3. HHBC--1 John Elective What do you know? 19a We will know by this that we are of the truth, How do you know you love them? The word for “know” is used about 26 times in the epistle. John is highly concerned that we have personal knowledge of these eternal truths. Peace comes from knowledge of the facts, not of our acts.

  4. HHBC--1 John Elective The True Truth 19a We will know by this that we are of the truth, What is true? “The truth”--this is singular, objective, unchanging, eternal John 4:16—I am the way, the truth, and the life. This isn't “feel-goodery”. We can have more than a subjective sense that what we are doing is just fine, or good enough.

  5. HHBC--1 John Elective Blessed Assurance 19b-20a and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; What is this assurance? assure—to persuade, or to be persuaded. In other words—persuaded, trusted, won over, relied, convinced, followed, took advice, urged, listened, obeyed, convinced, favored Thayer (by way of Wuest)--to tranquilize

  6. HHBC--1 John Elective Don't worry—Know! 19b-20a and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; What needs convincing? “Our heart”--our emotional/spiritual/mental center. John 14:1 Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. Feelings follow faith in the facts. God's presence will calm, and not condemn, us.

  7. HHBC--1 John Elective Heart Problems 19b-20a and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; How does our heart condemn? The standard of love set before us is humanly unattainable Legalism feeds us guilt for not meeting the mark. What precisely is our task? Our great struggle is not with sin, but with disbelief.

  8. HHBC--1 John Elective Heartfelt Condemnation 19b-20a and will assure our heart before Him in whatever our heart condemns us; What is this condemnation? condemn—to find fault with, to blame Is the focus here on condition or position? Are we to be measuring what we are doing? Do we find growth through suffering?

  9. HHBC--1 John Elective For all x, God > x 20b for God is greater than our heart and knows all things. In what way is God greater? Do we defer to God's judgments here? Do we look to Him to tell us if we are doing well or not? Is this referring to God's compassion? 1 John 3:1-2 & Romans 8:28-39—nullifies any and every feeling of guilt

  10. HHBC--1 John Elective Alternate Translation From Wuest: 1 John 3:19-20 In this we shall know experientially that we are out of the truth, and His presence shall tranquilize our hearts in whatsoever our heart condemns us, because greater is God than our hearts and knows all things.

  11. HHBC--1 John Elective A Confidence Man 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; When does our heart condemn us? Our heart condemns us when we are not resting in the truth. Confidence proceeds from resting in Christ. Confidence proceeds from our knowledge of the truth. This is Confidence in approaching God--Ephesians 2:18.

  12. HHBC--1 John Elective A Clear Conscience 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence before God; How can we make this a measuring stick? Do we have to be “sinless” to have this confidence? What role does un-confessed sin play here? Let us not forget, 1 John 2:1-1 What are the prerequisites for prayer? (enter year-long study of prayer here)

  13. HHBC--1 John Elective The Golden Ticket 22 and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. Is this a “genie in a bottle” verse? From where are we asking? For what are we asking? Hebrews 4:15-16, 1 John 5:14-15 When we are abiding in Christ, will we ever be selfish?

  14. HHBC--1 John Elective Do this to get this 22 and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight. Are we rewarded for our good works? By what means can we “keep His commandments”? What makes us “pleasing in His sight”? Sight—in the presence of a penetrating gave (Peter at the trial of Jesus)

  15. HHBC--1 John Elective Alternate Translation From Wuest: 1 John 3:21-22 Divinely-loved ones, if our heart is not condemning us, a fearless confidence we constantly have facing God (the Father), and whatever we are habitually asking, we keep on receiving from Him, because His commandments we are habitually keeping with solicitous care, and the things which are pleasing in His penetrating gaze we are habitually doing.
