A team of interested community leaders which originated within MTU. • THE FOCAL POINT IS THE COMMUNITY’S REDUCTION OF ELECTRICITY AND GAS CONSUMPTION. • THE CONTESTANT THAT DOES SO, AND SHOWS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN THE FOLLOWING METRICS, STANDS TO WIN $5 MILLION! • THESE ARE THE METRICS BY WHICH THE COMPETITION IS BEING JUDGED: • POINTSAREA OF SCORING • Competition Performance (actual energy savings) • 15 Innovation • 15 Potential for Replication • 10 Likely Future Performance • 10 Equitable Access, Community and Stakeholder Engagement • 10Education • 15Overall Quality and Success

GREAT NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS IN MANY AREAS: FROM NOW THROUGH DEC 2016 • www.energizehoughton.org/volunteer • CONTEST RUNS FROM JAN 1, 2015 – DEC 31, 2016 • ALL OF OUR ORGANIZATIONAL EFFORTS ARE LED BY VOLUNTEERS! • SECTORS BEING JUDGED: DOMESTIC AND MUNICIPAL USE 353 LIKES SO FAR • SOME EXAMPLES OF CURRENT VOLUNTEER NEED – this gets added to as we progress: • MATERIALS DONATIONS: Compiling contact information on manufacturers of energy efficient products in order to save on winterization costs. • a TWEETER! • TAKING PICTURES OF MUNICIPAL STREET LIGHTS in order to determine the make and model to help them switch to LED lighting.

  4. EXAMPLES OF FUTURE VOLUNTEER NEED: • MEDIA! We are writing grants to enable students to shoot and edit footage for our future YouTube Channel. The channel will feature: • NEWS-REPORT INTERVIEWS of winterization volunteers and recipients; • SHORTS on Winterization Tactics sponsored by local hardware stores, lumberyards and contractors; • FOOTAGE of HEET’s Monthly Teen Talent Show/Open Mic; • PRESENTATIONS from monthly HEET TARGET: ENERGY SERIES featuring energy experts from efficiency, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, policy and U.P. Energy Landscape ; • GAMIFICATION! Developing ways that we can inspire the community to get on, get in and save electricity and heat. • DATA CRUNCHING! How can we even make this sound fun?

KEWEENAW COMMUNITY FOUNDATION: YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL GRANT • Awarded HEET with a $1000 grant • 3 HIGH SCHOOLS; each with a team of 5 volunteers, to winterize 3-5 houses in Fall 2015 semester • TODAY, looking for 3 Team Leaders to lead the recruitment of 5 team members. • We can give a Team Leader $25 to do the job; and $25 for developing and printing materials needed to do so.

  6. how does this work? • STUDENT TEAMS learn the skills through NPTs Generations of Energy: Efficiency Model – built with another YAC grant by CLK shop students. • The Model teaches you the tools, materials and skillsets needed to winterize a home (Fall Semester, early) • STUDENT TEAMS work with NPT to pick a total of 3-5 homes to winterize next fall. • YOU LEARN LIFE-LONG SKILLS!

GENERATIONS OF ENERGY: EFFICIENCY MODEL • 9-POINT WINTERIZATION PROTOCOL: THERMAL TRANSFER AND HOW TO STOP IT • PERFORM A RIM JOIST SEAL • CAULK WINDOWS, DOORS AND FLOOR TRIM • INSULATE A WATER HEATER • INSULATE WATER PIPES • INSTALL A DOOR SWEEP AND WEATHER STRIPPING • INSULATE OUTER WALL OUTLETS AND LIGHT SWITCHES • CAULK/FOAM WIRE INLETS AND BASEMENT LEAKS • SHOP VAC DRYER VENT HOSE • MAKE INDOOR STORM WINDOWS
