Renewed Primary Framework

  • Clearer progression in learning for both literacy and mathematics

  • Greater emphasis on the use of ICT to support learning and teaching in literacy and mathematics

  • Electronic framework –

    • updating over time

    • Access to a wealth of materials to support teachers in their planning

    • Interactivity to support ease of planning

    • Access to policy and pedagogy guidance

Literacy mathematics

  • Key changes literacy

  • Learning objectives organised under twelve strands

  • Explicit inclusion of speaking and listening objectives

  • Stronger emphasis on building learning over time and developing the teaching sequence

  • Adjustment of expectations particularly around the learning and teaching of phonics

  • Closer focus on assessment for learning during, as well as at the end of, units of work

  • Reordering of the strands and separation of word reading from word comprehension

  • Greater signposting of Early Reading

  • 3 blocks mathematics

  • Literacy planning is organised into three main blocks:

  • narrative (plays and scripts)

  • non-fiction

  • poetry.

  • further divided into suggested units of learning and teaching.

  • 12 strands:

  • Speaking and Listening

  • Four strands

  • Speaking

  • Listening

  • Group discussion and interaction

  • Drama

  • Reading

  • Three strands

  • Word reading skills and strategies

  • Understanding and interpreting texts

  • Engaging with and responding to texts

  • Writing

  • Five strands

  • Creating and shaping texts

  • Text structure and organisation

  • Sentence structure and punctuation

  • Word structure and spelling

Role of ict in achieving school improvement
Role of ICT in achieving school improvement mathematics

  • 1/3 of the literacy unit plans have specific ICT outcomes

  • ICT is integrated across the phases of learning within each unit to support reading, speaking and listening, planning and writing

Literacy unit plans with specific ict outcomes
Literacy unit plans with specific ICT outcomes mathematics

  • units model use of ICT to support fiction, non-fiction and poetry

  • Aim was to support practitioners requiring further support planning for literacy over blocks of time and to model the integration of ICT

  • ICT is used where it will support the achievement of the learning outcomes, it is not present in every exemplified unit – only where it would significantly support the learning outcomes and meet the needs of the chosen audience and purpose

  • The units range in their challenge for both children and teachers in the application of ICT some are more appropriate for confident users of ICT looking to extend their practice others model the use of basic software in creative contexts for learning.

  • Emphasis is on the use of ICT to inspire pupils, support understanding of the way texts are constructed and use visual images, moving images, sounds and writing to create texts

UNIT 2 Learning outcomes:

Children understand that words, images and sounds can convey different elements of a narrative for a reader.

Children can write a traditional narrative using words, sounds and images to convey information about the main characters.

Key changes mathematics
Key changes - mathematics mathematics

  • Learning objectives are organised under 7 strands

  • Medium term planning model with units of work of 2 or 3 weeks to secure learning

  • Mental calculation given higher status and progression in written calculation is clarified

  • Adjustment of expectations particularly in lower Key Stage 2

  • Using and applying mathematics receives a higher profile

  • Sharper assessment tools throughout the learning process

  • Restructuring of the issue of standard written methods of calculation

  • Greater clarity in the use of calculators

7 strands mathematics

  • Use and apply mathematics

  • Count, compare and order numbers and describe relationships between them.

  • Secure knowledge of number facts which can be recalled quickly and used and applied appropriately.

  • Calculate efficiently and accurately.

  • Position and transform shapes, recognising and use their properties to visualise and construct.

  • Measure accurately using appropriate units, interpret and compare scales.

  • Process, present and interpret data to pose and answer questions.

5 blocks

Block A: Counting, partitioning and calculating

Block B: Securing number facts, understanding shape

Block C: Handling data and measures

Block D: Calculating, measuring and understanding shape

Block E: Securing number facts, relationships and calculating

Each block is made up of three units. A unit represents 2 or 3 weeks of teaching.
