  3. UKRR is .... United Kingdom Research Reserve a collaborative, co-ordinated and sustainable approach to long-term retention, storage and access to low use print research journals. http://www.ukrr.ac.uk/

  4. UKRR aims to... • Help university librarians rationalise their collections and release shelf space in their libraries • Preserve low use research material for the UK research community

  5. UKRR is a safety net • 3 copies of our titles kept by the UKRR community (one copy at BLDSC) • ...so other libraries can safely weed their collections

  6. UKRR Phase 2 2009 – 2014 Programme • Euros 14 m from UK government • 29 Universities in partnership with British Library (annual subscription)

  7. The score so far • 55,200m of low use research material processed by April 2012 • 84% (46,368m ) no longer needed • 14% retained either at BLDSC or in one of the UKRR member Libraries

  10. Key to UKRR’s success so far • Light infrastructure • Financial incentive to weed collections systematically • Dedicated software – LARCH to support decisions

  11. Linked Automated Register of Collaborative Holdings LARCH Supports the activities of UKRR, its members and partners. As well as allowing UKRR to co-ordinate the de-duplication process more effectively, LARCH provides a single point for accessing data relating to UKRR offered holdings, and facilitates better reporting on the data.
