  1. General Studies WorkshopGSP / CDFConcurrent Design FacilityActivity Report and PlansESTEC - 14 September 2006M. Bandecchi - TEC-SYEConcurrent Engineering section GSP workshop

  2. The Concurrent Design Facility was an initiative of and sponsored by the General Study Program in 1998 It became a TEC operational facility in 2000. GSP workshop

  3. Activities performed • 60+ (potential) future missions studied and designed internally at pre-Phase A, conceptual, system level • 3 new launcher concept design • 8 complex payload instrument design (IDA), incl. Platform, system, mission • 10 reviews of Industrial Phase A studies (internal + Industry) • 5 ISS on-board facilities/experiments accommodation studies; teaming with/supporting Industry in Phase A • Joint studies (Distributed Concurrent Engineering) with NASA/JPL/PDC-Team X, CNES CIC, Industry • Educational, training, promotion and standardisation activities Other figures: • 270 currently registered users • 497 ESA specialists, scientists, study/project managers have used the CDF • 55000 hours of CDF server desk-top provided in 1 year (Sept.05-Aug.06) • Hundreds of visitors every year (e.g. 800 in 2004) Achievements GSP workshop

  4. GSP workshop

  5. Spin-off • Request to transfer CDF know-how and software tonational Agencies, Industry, Academia. • Core CDF model (IDM) delivered to CNES, ASI, CSA, various industries, being subject of an ECSS standardisation exercise: ECSS E-10-01 (“TM”) How influential have we been? Based on the CDF model, the following facilities have been (are being) created: • CNES CIC 2005 • ASI CEF 2006 pl. • AAS (F) “Cannes” CDF 2006 pl. • Un. Sapienza Rome CDF 2006 • EPFL (CH) CDF 2006 pl. • VSSEC (Aus) CDF 2006 GSP workshop

  7. Studies planned in 2006 • EOP: • XMWR: modelling activity for a LEO cross track MicroWave Radiometer • SCI: • REIS: Review of Europa Industrial Study • WFI: Wide Field Imager • FIM: Far Infrared Mission • LAU: • Socrates 2 • GSP: • DCP: Dual cryogenic propulsion study • SOC: System on Chip • FBW: fly by wireless • DMA5: A5 Dual mission launches • RamELEC: Ram Electric propulsion thrusters for very low orbit observation satellites and planetary exploration • HME: • Phobos Sample return GSP workshop

  8. Looking for new applications of CDF and CE Application of CE to later phases and to a large community New technologies Implementation for future missions Model technologies development • - GSP contract • on application of CE • to anomaly treatment • GSP CDF study: • NEO review of phase A GSP contract on instrument modelling • GSP CDF studies: • Fly by wireless • in flight demonstration • Combined long term • cryogenic propulsion • for interplanetary mission GSP workshop

  9. Plans • Consolidation of the CDF Integrated Design Model (IDM) – creation of a ‘product’ IDM - to be able to distribute it to the institutional partners • Extension of the CDF service to other Customers / Programmes (e.g Telecom), developing/integrating related tools and competences • Application to new mission and system concepts (e.g. system on chip), developing new specific models and architectures • Creation of an European distributed concurrent / collaborative environment to favourite the application of Concurrent Engineering to later phases of the project life-cycle. • “GRID-based Distributed Concurrent Design” on-going TRP project for the study and prototype of a Virtual Distributed Design Facility, GRID based GSP workshop
