Key Messages: Resume Building • What does a resume do? • Provides potential employer with vital contact information • Allows you to BRAG about your accomplishments and abilities • Offers an opportunity to differentiate yourself from the 100+ people applying • Shows the employer if you are a good fit for the job • Where do you start? • Start with a copy of someone else's resume • Fill in your information • Limit it to one page • Ask several people to review it for your and provide comments • Carefully check for spelling and grammatical errors

Key Messages: Resume Building • What Information Should a Resume Contain? • Contact Information – name, address, email, phone etc. • Objective – what kind of job do you want? • Experience – What jobs have you done before? Add volunteer work to this section if applicable • Education –What degree are you working towards • Community & leadership experience – Have you helped organize a luncheon, led a Bible study, volunteered at a school, worked on a cleaning staff, etc.? • Special skills or abilities – Can you use a computer? What programs do you know? Do you like to cook, exercise, read? • NOTE: • Take an inventory of your strengths and weaknesses • Once you start writing your resume, Do NOT give up and Do NOT fear failure • Learn from your mistakes! Avoid judgment and self-discouragement! • Be true to yourself, your passion, your dreams

Key Messages: Interviewing Tips • Important items to note: • Preparation is the key to success • Research the prospective employer • Use available resources, e.g. company website, current employees, other professionals in the field • Spend time assessing your skills • Understand job description and list relevant skills relating to position • List specific examples of how and when you demonstrated each skill • Promote your proudest achievements • Include both work and personal examples • Practice your answers to common questions • Show your interest and ask questions • Write a thank you letter within 24 hours of the interview • If you are not contacted in the stated timeframe, call back and restate your interest • Learn from your experience; evaluate what went well as well as areas of improvement and document for the next interview • Use the STAR interview method
