  2. April 17th, 1845 Today, we headed West. After hearing stories of Indian attacks, we decided to assemble a wagon train for safety. We bought supplies at the town square and met up with other travelers. We made it across the border to Kansas and are staying the night at the Shawnee Mission.

  5. April 25th, 1845 The weather has been great and everyone is in good health. We passed through Alcove Spring today and it was beautiful! Some members of our wagon train talked of settling here.

  7. May 10th, 1845 Emma and Nathaniel are feeling ill, so we decided to camp for a couple of nights at the Rock Creek Station in Nebraska after purchasing some supplies.

  9. May 27th, 1845 We arrived at Fort Kearney today. There are many emigrants here and the fort is bustling with activity. It is not as we expected, but we were able to replenish our food supply. Emma and Nathaniel are feeling better, but we had to replace one of our oxen.

  11. June 5th, 1845 After a long day of crossing the Platte River, we are resting at Ash Hollow. We were able to cross the river safely, but one of the wagons in our train crashed and they lost everything. Ash Hollow is beautiful. There are many trees here. We are enjoying our first taste of fresh water in weeks.

  13. June 22nd, 1845 We saw some amazing sights on our journey this week! We passed by Courthouse Rock, Chimney Rock, and Scott’s Bluff.

  15. July 5th, 1845 We have arrived at Ft. Laramie, Wyoming. We have waited almost two months to be near civilization again. Mary has a fever. We are resting here until her fever breaks. The prices at the trading post are too high, so we will not buy supplies here.

  17. July 21st, 1845 We saw Independence Rock today. We have been seeing a lot of soldiers and we fear a hostile encounter with the Sioux Indians. The heat has been unbearable and we are traveling slower.

  19. September 1st, 1845 We made it through Wyoming and have arrived at Fort Hall in Idaho. We have passed through some beautiful country. The wagon needs to be repaired, so we will purchase some supplies at the Fort even though prices are high.

  21. September 20th, 1845 We passed by Shoshone Falls and it was breathtaking! It is similar to Niagra Falls. We made our way to the Three Mile Crossing at the Snake River. We have decided it is too dangerous to cross, so we will follow the river around the bend, instead.

  24. October 1st, 1845 We have arrived at Ft. Boise. Everyone is tired and wants to rest, but we still have 400 miles to go and the snows will come soon. We don’t want to end up like the Donner party!

  26. October 28th, 1845 We finally arrived in Oregon! We lost some of our belongings and two of our oxen, but we are all alive and healthy. We have decided to settle in Grande Ronde.
