  1. A collaboration with ORNL / PPPL Scraper Element Collaboration Arnie Lumsdaine Jeff Harris 3/3/2011

  2. A collaboration with ORNL / PPPL Background • The W7-X stellarator will begin operation in 2015 with an inertially cooled divertor which will allow short pulse operation for two years. • In 2017, an actively cooled divertor will be delivered (in 10 divertor units) that should allow for steady-state operation. • In order to protect divertor target elements and pumping gap, a Scraper Element has been proposed to be placed in each divertor unit.

  3. A collaboration with ORNL / PPPL Scope of Collaboration • The US, led by ORNL will produce a detailed engineering design. • The US will also investigate whether the proposed design raises any physics issues which could compromise the operation of the machine. • IPP will be responsible for the prototype, and for the procurement of the final elements.

  4. A collaboration with ORNL / PPPL Schedule • The work should be completed by mid CY2012 – earlier if at all possible. • The US will have a draft Gantt chart completed by March 19.
