  2. Learning Objectives • What does Ryle mean by a category mistake? • To understand the significance of the ‘Ghost in the machine’ for the debate about body/soul. • To understand and evaluate logical behaviourism.

  3. For starters 1. Write two headings ‘Mental ’ and ‘Physical’. Under each, write down phrases that are used to describe mental states and in the other write down phrases describing physical states. Can there be a corresponding description of all mental states, that only reference physical events? 2. Can a dog feel pain? How do you know?

  9. Logical behaviourism • Mental phrases can be reformulated and explained by observable behaviours. • The mental states are not separate like dualists claim. Make your own example of an ‘if… then ….’ That would give us a behaviourist explanation of someone being scared or happy.
