  1. From a pond to the Olympics Martina Sáblíková Quite a lot of speedskaters start their careers at a pond or lake. But very few of them become top athletes and even fewer get to the Olympics. Martina Sábliková not only succeeded in getting to the Olympics, but she actually won one bronze medal (1,500 m) and two gold medals (3,000 m and 5,000 m) in Vancouver in 2010. Born on May 27, 1987 she first emerged among the best in 2005 , becoming the seventh in the 5,000 m during the World Single Distance Championships. In the same year she won junior world record in Salt Lake City skating the 3,000 m. To list Martina`s other achievements, she has already won two bronze and four gold medals in European Championships and one bronze, four silver and ten gold medals in World Championships over the years 2007-2013. The 5,000 m world record holder is still waiting for a suitable training grounds since there is no speed skating stadium in the Czech Republic. There is to be a skating oval built for her on the other athletes in Velký Osek where she currently lives, but so far Sáblíková's coach Petr Novák had to devise several unorthodox but successful training methods. Long distances in speedskating being her forte, Martina also competed in several inline speed skating andcycling races as a part of her summer preparation for the skating season. After her most recent winning of two gold medals (3,000 m and 5,000 m) at Universiade in Trentino in 2013, she is now training for her further endeavors. All we can do is to keep our fingers crossed for her and wish her good luck! source: en.Wikipedia.org , sports news broadcasts
