  2. IBL CO2 Cooling system status • Plant status in USA15 • All cooling units operational and running relatively smooth • Most tuning of control loops performed • Stepper procedures verified • Some issues to be solved: • Water cooled chiller operation is not working • Design concept error, needs a modification • Still missing flow switch • Level probes calibration • Needs a complex calibration procedure, on hold due to more urgent matters • Filter dP, • Different filters size installed • Too small stand-by injector valve • New cartridge • Rotarex valve end switches • Very bad feedback from company • Commissioning has started • Both system A and B are operational • Cooling over junction box with dummy load achieved.

  3. Plants @ USA15 L3

  4. Vacuum transfer line status Plant Side Transfer line installed in October ‘13 UX15

  5. Junction installation 3kW dummy load heater Manual valves

  6. Cooling start-up Cooldown In current configuration is 3kW to much for -40’C operation, unable to hold set-point (green line) Pressurization of the system -40’C set-point reached -35’C setpoint 3kW 2kW 1kW

  7. System preparation for start-up Accu cool down Liquid arriving Pressurization of the system by accu heating System is full liquid Warm start under low pressure Pump and chiller start

  8. Nominal IBL condition. -40’C set point with 2kW JB power Dummy load: 2kW Dummy load: 0W Compressor speed Mass flow Junction box temperature = IBL reference Accumulator saturation = Controlled temperature (-40ºC) Sub cooling margin CO2 liquid temperature Chiller temperature

  9. SP=-35’C operation Compressor at full speed, temperature of liquid increases 2000W 1500W 1000W 2500W 500W 0W 0W Junction box temperature Margin of sub cooling must be maintained. >10’C for safe operation Capable of maintaining set point from 0 to 3kW Chiller temperature and CO2 liquid

  10. SP=-40’C operation Compressor at full speed, temperature of liquid increases 2500W 3000W 0W 2000W 1500W Junction box temperature -35’C to -40’C set point change Margin of sub cooling must be maintained. >10’C for safe operation Unable to maintain -40’C setpoint Capable of maintaining set point from 0 to 2kW Chiller temperature and CO2 liquid

  11. Conclusions and Outlook • The IBL cooling is starting to work. • First observations: • -40’C operation is more critical than expected from -30’C experience. • -35’C operation is okay up to 3kW • Pressure drops are more significant than expected • More heat load in liquid pump, meaning a higher needed minimum sub cooling. • Direct effect on the lowest possible temperature. • All above adds up and brings target operational performance to become critical for higher heat loads • Stepper procedures and control works nicely. • Interlocks stops are becoming rare • Start-up is relatively smooth
