  1. Innovating with Open Datahttp://melodiesproject.eu Jon Blower University of Reading Project coordinator

  2. MELODIES overview • Maximizing the Exploitation of Linked Open Data In Enterprise and Science • 3 years, started 1st November 2013 • 16 partners in 8 EU countries • €6.7M budget • Aims to demonstrate the business and scientific benefits of releasing data openly • Responds to European Open Data Strategy • Sister project of SWITCH-ON and SmartOpenData

  3. Objectives • To combine multiple open data streams to develop innovative environmental services; • To apply Linked Data and Semantic Webapproaches to enhance the services and generate new knowledge; • To deliver reusable technologythat facilitates the exploitation of open data; • To ensure that the services are sustainable beyond the lifetime of the project; • To demonstrate the value of open data and stimulate the release of more open data by data providers.

  4. The MELODIES services

  5. Shared Technology Platform • “Sandboxes” for development and testing • Data staging for shared datasets • Scalable, parallel data processing • Management of Geospatial Linked Data • Visualization and mapping • Data publishing through open Web Services Reusing developments from GeoWOW, GENESI-DEC, TELEIOS, GeoViQua, MyOcean, more…

  6. Some technologies we are using • Terraduecloud platform and sandbox environment • Building on GeoWOW • Strabon database for geospatial Linked Data • Building on TELEIOS • Web Mapping, OGC web services and portal tools • Building on MyOcean, GeoViQua, more…

  7. Sustainability • Dedicated workpackage looking at sustainability issues: • Economic/financial • Technical • Legal • Examines changes in the Open Data landscape • Examines potential of services to expand beyond initial geographic boundaries • Provides evidence-based recommendations back to policymakers regarding open data policies

  8. How it all fits together

  9. Conclusions • Project aims to demonstrate that releasing data openly leads to strong commercial and scientific exploitation • A key challenge is to combine diverse sources of Open Data • Earth Observation • Modelling and forecasting • Socioeconomic/government data • We have only just started – please keep in touch!
