  3. From whom does God want “the learned” to learn? Luke 4:24-28 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown. I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. And there were many in Israel with leprosy in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.” All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this.   6. 1. Understanding that God Sometimes Leaves the Specifics to Us God told Elijah He would take care of him. Sometimes God makes it obvious…ravens.

  9. In the second instance, God left it to Elijah to figure out specifics. Which widow? Elijah had to test to find the right one.

  10. Commandments/Principles vs Specifics God commands us to have faith, we must work out the specifics, the details: Marrieds - How did you know you met the right person? God tells us the principles about what we should look for in a spouse - believer, fears the Lord. We are left to figure out the details.

  11. Sometimes we want to wait until God provides the specifics! We want the principles AND the details… • Workplace as a mission – Where? How? • Role as a lay leader – Exactly what role?

  12. Final Thoughts on Getting There from Here in the areas of Gifts and Responsibility As we use our gifts and encourage other professionals to use their gifts, let us respect ALL gifts. Everyone in the local church is important, all parts of the body are special, (I Cor 12 and James 1:9-12 and James 2:1-13). As parents, let us convey that to our children, and if we are in leadership, let us convey that to all we are training.

  14. 2) Understanding that God Wants Us to Trust for the Long Haul The widow had to decide – short term by sight (one meal) or long term by faith (potentially many meals). Many panic/get anxious and short-sighted.

  15. SHORT TERM/ BY SIGHT • Shady deals • Worldly • Sacrifice for their work, not for His church… Why? Work – short term by sight. Long term – trust…more difficult…

  16. Many of the brothers and sisters who shared this weekend are incredibly generous with their wealth and responsibility. I, Karen, have learned generosity from my parents and grandparents. Let us pass the legacy of integrity in business, desire for “spiritual wealth”, and generosity with monetary wealth. Final Thoughts on Getting There from Here in the area of Wealth

  18. 3) Understanding that God Wants Us to Disciple Each Other God put widow in Elijah’s life to help him trust God. God put Elijah in widow’s life to help her trust God. Both had to rely on each other to fulfill God’s command.

  19. Lay leaders and full-time leaders are put in each other’s life to help both sides fulfill God’s command. It is a partnership – let us help one another other.
