  1. SDCG-6 Session 7JAXA contributions to R&D Support strategy (Element 3) Masanobu Shimada JAXA EORC

  2. Acquisitions over GFOI R&D Study Sites JAXA has implemented a Basic Observation Scenario ("BOS") for ALOS-2 which comprises • 10m Dual-pol stripmap mode: At least 2 observations/year in over all global forest regions, with up to 6 obs/year over all tropical forests • 100m Dual-pol ScanSAR mode: 9 obs/year (every 42 days) over all tropical forests New acquisition requests for GFOI can not be accommodated, but it is anticipated that the BOS – which is fully compliant with SDCG recommendations for L-band SAR (at least dual season, resolution <30m, dual-pol) – satisfies the GFOI R&D requirements.

  3. Archive data over GFOI R&D Study Sites and mosaic data JAXA historical archives of L-band SAR data from JERS-1, ALOS and ALOS-2 constitute long-term and consistent time-series data over the global forest cover (with emphasis on tropical and boreal) from mid 1990's to present (1992-1998, 2006-2011,2014+) On request, JAXA can undertake archive search of historical data over the GFOI Study Sites from JERS-1, ALOS and ALOS-2. The JAXA archive can be searched online at: <Link to AUIG-2 web site> In additionglobal ortho-slope corrected PALSAR mosaics (2007-2010) and Forest/Non-Forest maps are available by JAXA. Free download at : http://www.eorc.jaxa.jp/ALOS/en/palsar_fnf/fnf_index.htm Since Jan 16, 2014: 50 m pixel spacing From end of October 2015: 25 m pixel spacing. Will also include ALOS-2 (2014+)

  4. Data provision for GFOI R&D Conditions for data provision: Within the framework of the GEO Forest Carbon Tracking (GEO-FCT) Task 2009-2013 JAXA provided ALOS standard product data free of charge to GEO-FCT research groups (<50 scenes/year/group) in the 11 National Demonstrator countries. In support of GFOI R&D activities, JAXA anticipates: • ALOS: 50? (TBC) • ALOS-2: 50? (TBC) (Can limited amounts of ALOS and ALOS-2 data be provided free of charge also for GFOI R&D? Yes!)

  5. Data provision for GFOI R&D Data request and access procedures: Data access procedures for GFOI: To be determined.

  6. Coordinated Research Opportunities Please indicate any forthcoming research announcement(s) that may be relevant to the GFOI R&D plan. • The next RA for ALOS-2 (RA6) will be issued July 2015 for application research for PALSAR-2. • Possibility for open calls targeted at GFOI support, coordinated partly/fully through SDCG Element 3? (coordination with ALOS-2 RA6 may be foreseen) • Funding opportunities (if any): JAXA does not provide funding, only data.

  7. Other issues of relevance ALOS-2 and ALOS-2 data policies are commercial. For data requests outside of GFOI R&D support, contact the commercial distributors (RESTEC and PASCO for ALOS-2: RESTEC for ALOS-1).
