  1. LOOKING INWARD Principals Information Session February 26 2014 Staff Development Centre Cape Breton – Victoria Regional School Board

  2. Looking Inward • A planning framework for CBVRSB • A candid review of board challenges and a call to action • Following Phase 1;Composed of 81 scenarios • Final Chapter to be written after extensive public consultation and engagement activities

  3. Challenge • Challenges is to create schools with sufficient enrolment to support equitable programs and service sustainability against a backdrop of declining enrolment.

  4. Scenarios • 32 in original document • 6 administrative scenarios • 22 SAC • 21 Public • Total 81 scenarios • All on website

  5. Family of Schools Models • We are currently building family of schools models based on these scenarios. • These models will reflect selected scenarios with a view to addressing the accommodation of all students in each family of schools • The models will identify potential capital projects, potential changes to grade level configuration and will identify potential school closures.

  6. Grade Level Configuration Staff recommendation is to move in the direction of 9- 12 schools and either P-8 or P-5 and 6 to 8 as circumstances of time and space warrant. The board has not finalized this position, however, you will see this reflected in many of the models you will be working with.

  7. Family of Schools Student Accommodation Groups • Next Step is formation of Family of Schools Student Accommodation Groups (FSSAG) • Composition • 1 Board level Coordinator to facilitate • The principal of all schools in the family of schools • 1 to 3 SAC members from each school ( depending on numbers) • Mandate • To review and comment on the family of schools models • Potentially to propose improvements or alternatives • Timeline • March-- Organization • April to June ---complete work and report by June 30th.

  8. Family of Schools Student Accommodation Groups • Principal’s Role • Modeled after SAC role • Ex-offico member • Continue to bring your expertise to the table • Assist in guiding members to accurate and appropriate information Also • Assist with initial organization • Participate in the discussion and preparation of the response • Assist the facilitator with keeping meetings on track

  9. Next Steps • Finalize 3 documents • FSSAG terms of reference • Finalize proposed Fof S models • Finalize disposition of scenarios document • Start up of FSSAG’s • Next action for you • Assist in having the FSSAG’s organized by facilitating the appointment of SAC members to participate.

  10. Family of Schools Student Accommodation Groups • Some things to keep in mind • The FSSAG are advisory in nature, not decision making in nature. • Purpose of Looking Inward is to return resources to the classroom. The status quo is not an option • As we proceed ask yourself • In the context of declining enrollment does what we are suggesting in the models make sense? • And • If not these models then how do we address excess capacity and the significant impact this has on resources for programs and services?

  11. Objective • Goal #1: Sustaining the quality and quantity of educational programs and services for students.
