Chapter 26. FWD Final Drive Units. Transaxle Final Drive Features. The differential operates basically the same as in a RWD axle. There is no 90-degree change in direction. The drive pinion is connected to the transmission output shaft. The ring gear is attached to the differential case.

  2. Transaxle Final Drive Features • The differential operates basically the same as in a RWD axle. • There is no 90-degree change in direction. • The drive pinion is connected to the transmission output shaft. • The ring gear is attached to the differential case.

  3. Types of Final Drive Assemblies • Helical gear type • Planetary gear type • Chain drive

  4. Helical Gear Drive Features • A helical gear has teeth cut at an angle. • It requires that the centerline of the pinion gear be at the centerline of the ring gear. • The pinion gear is meshed with the ring gear.

  5. Planetary Gear Drive Features • The sun gear is driven by the output shaft of the transaxle. • The sun gear drives the planet gears, whose carrier is part of the differential case. • The ring gear is held stationary.

  6. Chain and Gear Drive Features • Use a multiple-link chain to connect a drive sprocket to a driven sprocket. • The drive sprocket is attached to the transmission output shaft. • The driven sprocket is attached to the differential case.

  7. Checking the Fluid Level • Be sure to use the correct type of fluid. • The fluid level should be at the bottom of the fill plug opening. • Always refer to the shop manual before refilling the axle housing.

  8. Helical Gear Drive Service Tips • Check for chipped or worn gears. • Check for overloaded bearings. • Check for excessive differential side gear wear.

  9. Planetary Gear Drive Service Tips • When checking for chipped teeth, pay particular attention to the planet gears. • Check the planet gears for loose bearings. • Check the planet gears for proper end play.

  10. Chain and Sprocket Drive Service Tips • Check the chain for side play and stretch. • Very little or no deflection is allowed. • Check the sprockets for tooth wear. • Check the bearings and bushings used on the sprocket for damage.

  11. Adjustments • Most units require side gear end play and side bearing preload adjustments. • Always use the proper tools to make adjustments. • Adjustments are typically made with the differential case assembled but out of the transaxle.

  12. Component Replacement Tips • Always use a puller to remove bearings, and a press and driver to install them. • When replacing the bearings, make sure the bearing seats are free from nicks and burrs. • When installing a ring gear, use only bolts of the specified hardness.
