  1. SEMINAR 1. Title : Importance of Aerosol Neutralizer in Size Distribution Measurement 2. Speaker : Senior Researcher Soon-Bark Kwon (Korea Railroad Research Institute; KRRI) 3. Time : 16:00 – 17:30, Thursday, May 10, 2007 4. Place : e+ Lecture Hall (room 83188), 2nd Research Building, Sungkyunkwan University 5. Summary : Aerosol neutralization is an important process in order to obtain the original size distribution by SMPS measurement and to obtain accurate size of nanoparticles by using DMA. Radioactive sources such as Kr-85, Am-241, Po-210 are widely used as aerosol neutralizer, however, there are limitations of legal restrictions, insufficient ion concentration, asymmetry in positive and negative ion properties, and aging. Surface-discharge Microplasma Aerosol Charger (SMAC) was developed and it can be successfully adopted for neutralizing aerosol particles. SMAC can be used as three distinctive modes of operation, namely neutralizing, shifted bipolar charging, and unipolar charging modes by controlling positive and negative ion concentrations. It was found that the Kr-85 neutralizers did not show the comparative performance in charge neutralization when it is compared with SMAC and Po-210 neutralizers. The seminar also includes brief introduction of current research area at Korea Railroad Research Institute (KRRI) during the first half time of presentation. 6 Background : Education 1997 Mechanical Engineering, Inha University, B.S 1999 Environmental Engineering, Gwangju Institute of Sci.&Tech.
