  2. Overview • The problem of slaves brought out the best and the worst out of some. • The issue of slaves had one way or another to increase tension, until it finally lead to war

The Cotton Kingdom Cotton Gin-an invention that made the work for those in the south much easier The New South- Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Western Georgia, and Northern Florida Plantation-Large farms on which plants were grown by slaves. Antebellum-The period of time before the Civil War Cash Crop-Crops grown only for the purpose of money

The Cotton Kingdom • The need of slaves increased as the need for cotton increased in the south. • The north had many anti-slavery feelings, these were deeply despised by the south. • The slaves was able to give the south more states due to population. • Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas all became states due to slaves.

  5. Life on a plantation • Cultural heritage- a persons language, art, beliefs, etc. • This is an example of a plantation, where countless slaves would work.

  6. Life on a plantation • Tensions between slaves and their masters grew. • Their were many slaves revolts during the antebellum. None of which were that successful. • Even those who did not have slaves still supported the use of slavery, in spite of the slave revolts

  7. The Other Souths • Yeoman Farmers- owners of small farms, did not have slaves. • Artisans- workers trained in skilled trades such as printing and cabinet making. • Some blacks were able to escape the south to head up north. Others were able to but their freedom.

The Other Souths • Frederick Douglass, who used to be a slave, escaped by running away from his plantation, he grew to be one of history’s greatest writers. • Yeoman farmers, and mountain people were very independent. • The education for blacks was very bad compared to the whites education. • The dependence on slaves in the south increased the desire to end slavery in the north. This tension continued to grow and grow, an action that would one day lead to war.
