  1. The Great Race For The PNPY Cup • It is an event unlike any other. A multifaceted competition that leaves no category untouched. From the carnage on the athletic fields, to the creativity on the decorative front, the PNPY Cup will test your versatility, ingenuity and competitiveness. Derek Jeter once said, “I could have won a World Series ring every year of my career…but I still would feel unaccomplished.” And why do you think that is? In an interview with Buster Olney, Jeter continues his statement, “ And its not cus of the golden gloves or anything baseball related really, I’ve had a great run. The one thing…if I could go back…man I want that PNPY Cup.” In a completely fictional and falsified turn of events, Derek Jeter in fact came up short of the PNPY Cup in 1988 as a sophomore. When asked about where it all went wrong, Jeter becomes emotional, “ You know, I thought we had a chance to be a threat. We had a lot of competitive vibe on our floors. But we only showed up to three or four games all year, and got manhandled in decorating for holidays.” When asked if he would give it all up to go back, it doesn’t take long for a response from a steely eyed legend, “ In a heart beat”. • If you’re reading this absolutely confused about what the PNPY Cup is, don’t fret, here’s where I actually explain it’s structure. The PNPY Cup is an event between all three residence halls split into four teams (Payne East, Payne West, NRE, PY). All year athletic competitions, decorative competitions, and frankly, any competition you want to challenge somebody in will be taking place in order to determine the winner of the PNPY Cup in April. What’s so great about the Cup, right? It’s just a stupid little trophy, why should I care? My answer: If Derek Jeter is still haunted by it to this day, you should care. After two months of competition, the rankings are as follows. If you see your hall on the bottom looking up…then it’s time to get to work. • Payne West (40 pts) 2. Payne East (30 pts) 3. NRE (20 pots) 4. PY (20 pts) • Will you be hoisting the cup in April? Only time will tell, but if I have one piece of advice towards the cup, it would be summed up in a five word sentence. Don’t be like Derek Jeter. Upcoming Events Payne Hall -Movie Nights: Saturday nights, 2nd floor crossover -Casino Nights in the 1st floor lounge -TV Shows; 2nd floor lounge: Desp. 2. Meet One of Our “Adopt a Hall” Officers: Officer John Tarter Where are you from? I am From Newport News, VA. I retired from the Newport News Police Department in July 2009. I started working here at Tech in June 2009. Why did you become a police officer? I became a police officer most likely due to my father being a career soldier in the Army What do you like about working at Virginia Tech? I like working at VTPD because the focus is on Community Policing. I make it a point to do foot patrols and bike patrols around campus. This gets me out of the car and allows me to get to know the University community. Who is your favorite football player? My favorite football player is Brett Farve. I was excited when he returned last year and the Vikings did so well, but I think it is time for him to retire for real. I am a Packers fan. What is your favorite candy bar? I like Kit Kat bars. *Leave a message with farm animal sounds on someone's answering machine. ( it might be in your best interest to know the person, do this to a friend or family member) *See how many people are listed in the phone book with your last name. Call them up and tell them you're their long lost cousin. *Give yourself a pat on the back and affirm that you made it another day. *Twirl like a 5 year old child *Jump rope *Compliment someone! (this could even get you a date if you play your cards right) *DO NOT WORRY, life isn’t just based on tests and GPA *NEVER FORGET YOU ARE AMAZING POLICE!!! Hearing this exclamation usually gets a lot of peoples’ attentions, especially students on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday night. To so many, the police or anything associated with them is viewed in a negative light. Yes, most know that the police are here to help us when we are in need, yet the fear of getting caught or in trouble seems to dominate over any positive view we have of the them. To try and reverse this mindset the Virginia Tech Police Department began what is known as the “Adopt a Hall” program. This was started several years ago to increase the security within each individual residence hall. Each officer is assigned to two or three residence halls across campus in which they patrol and monitor behavior. This year, the VTPD have changed their focus toward a more relationship oriented position. Instead of simply observing the buildings, they have agreed to become more of a presence within the halls and form relationships with, not only the RA’s, but with the residents, as well. Feedback from Officer Tarter, who has been assigned to all three of the buildings in our complex (Payne, PY, and New Res East), has reported seeing surprised faces and more of a tendency to walk the opposite direction instead of an attempt to meet and converse with him. This is not too surprising, though considering the overall negative context within which police are placed. Ultimately, we want to take this opportunity to remind you that police are , in fact, here to help us and to “be our friends”. Officer Tarter, and the other officers assigned to our buildings simply want to get to know us more so that we feel more comfortable going to them to ask for help when it is needed. With that said, next time you see an officer in your building, take some time to say hi and introduce yourself. After all, you never know when you might end up in need of some friendly assistance! 3. Civic Identity : Defining your place in our Common home What is my Civic Identity ? Your Civic Identity can be as simple as,” I'm the quiet funny guy in the neighborhood” or as complicated as, “ I'm an outgoing builder of community who is focused on applying studies to help build my community.” This year the Residence Life staff have a set of goals that we want to achieve each semester. As you may have noticed this year, the concept of civility and a civil community is a huge part of the residence life experience this year. To help facilitate this we have created our CDP (excerpt found below). Community Development Plan Learning Outcome A) Students living in Payne, New Residence Hall East, and Peddrew-Yates will develop a civil community in their residential community. 1. In the Fall Semester, members of the PNPY community will be exposed to the elements of community. 2. In the Fall Semester, members of the PNPY community will be exposed to the concept of civility. 3. In the Fall Semester, members of the PNPY community will engage in the development of the elements of community in their hall and complex. One of the goals coming up soon is to talk to all the residents and ask them , “What is your civic identity in the hall?” To help facilitate this, here are some helpful tips and questions to help answer this question. What kind of person am I (outgoing, reclusive, chill, excitable) ??? How do I interact with my neighbors and the rest of my hall ??? What do I see my place in the residence hall as ??? Am I a functioning member of my community ??? Being able to describe and articulate what you feel your civic identity is in the residence hall is very important to the residence life staff and your RA. Feel free to be proactive and ask your RA about this, you will be pleasantly surprised. Stay tuned and expect your RA to bring this up soon !!! - Rick Lewis About the Publication PNPY Monthly will be the newsletter for the PNPY community for the 2010/2011 school year. It is written and edited by the RAs of Payne, New Residence Hall East, and Peddrew Yates. The goal of the publication is to inform and entertain its readers. Therefore, comical articles will be placed in the newsletter for entertainment purposes only. The opinions of the University, Professional Staff, or the RA’s are not necessarily in line with those expressed here.
