  4. Unemployment TRENTON, N.J. - Will New Jersey's unemployment rate finally be going down, or could it hit 10 percent? Those questions will be answered Thursday when officials release the state's employment report for August. The rate hit 9.8 percent in July, the highest for the state in 35 years. That came as two months of strong private-sector job growth skidded to a halt. In May and June, the state was adding private-sector jobs but the unemployment rate still rose as more people looked for jobs. New Jersey's unemployment rate has been at or above 9 percent for 38 months in a row.

  5. Shooting A teenage boy died early Monday night after being shot several times in broad daylight in South Philadelphia's Point Breeze neighborhood. Cops said that the victim, who would have turned 17 next week, was sitting on a stoop at 3:20 p.m. when someone opened fire on him, hitting him in the left side of his head, the right side of his chest and the left thigh. Police transported him to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:15 p.m. Spent shell casings littered 19th Street north and south of Federal. A small pool of blood stained the sidewalk at the bottom of the stoop where investigators said responding officers found the victim lying. As of late last night, detectives had not found any witnesses to the midday fatal shooting.

  6. Death John Ingle, who played stately Edward Quartermaine on General Hospital from 1992 until last week, died Sunday, reports People.com. ABC says Ingle taped his final appearance on GH on Aug. 24, and that episode aired Sept. 11. The soap's exec producer, Frank Valentini, tweeted the news two hours ago, writing: "With great sadness, I share the news of John Ingle's passing. We love him and will miss him. John will always be a part of the #GH family." In 1954, Ingle married Grace-Lynn Martin, and the two remained married 58 years, until her death in February. They had five daughters, says IMDB, and nine grandchildren. In a posting on Facebook Monday, his family said: "Father, Husband, Grandan, Great Grandan, Brother, Uncle, Friend, Teacher, Inspirer, Mentor: May You Soar with the Angels. You will forever hold a special place in the deepest corners of our hearts."
