  1. How a Wooden Hanger is Made Wooden hanger are sturdy and durable, making them an excellent choice for coats, suits, dresses, shirts, blouses and even lingerie. They also come in a wide variety of natural wood grain colors and styles to fit the décor of any closet. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, they also keep clothes in better shape and prevent wrinkles, whereas hangers made of plastic or wire can stretch out necklines or cause shoulder bumps. To make wooden hangers, workers first drill holes into each piece of wood where a hook will later be inserted. Then, each piece of raw wood is either dipped into a varnish bath (for larger orders) or hand-varnished (for smaller, custom work). This gives the wood an attractive, robust finish that will stand up to heavy use and frequent contact. Once the varnish is dry, a worker will then insert a purchased hook into each piece of wood. This will be done with a large drill, which can produce a hundred or more hangers in an hour. At this point, the wooden hangers are ready to be shipped or sold. In the next step of production, a skilled worker will smooth each hanger with a wood file or sandpaper. This is done to eliminate any rough edges and give the hangers their signature sleek, elegant appearance. Finally, a coat of clear or pigmented varnish is applied to the finished hangers. This seals the wood and helps to protect it from moisture or stains. Some kinds of wood, such as pine and beech, are cheaper and used more widely to make wooden hangers. Others, such as cedar and walnut, are more expensive but offer superior performance. Cedar wood, for example, naturally repels moths, which can damage and ruin expensive wool or cashmere sweaters when they lay their eggs on them. While plastic hangers are okay for lighter shirts and dresses, they tend to bend or break under the weight of heavier coats and suits. This can cause the shoulders of these garments to sag, creating the dreaded “shoulder bump” . Wooden hangers are much sturdier and don’ t have this problem. Moreover, they are designed to be kind to the necklines of the clothes that are placed on them, especially those with wide, delicate or slippery textures. This will prevent the shoulders from stretching out or forming shoulder bumps, which can degrade the look of the neckline and lead to permanent folds in the fabric. One TikTok user and personal men’s stylist explained how swapping out wire, plastic and velvet hangers for wooden ones will save time in the long run by preventing the need to constantly reposition or adjust clothes as they are hung up. This will also help to reduce wrinkles, a major time and money saver when it comes to laundry and ironing. Finally, the wide design of wooden hangers makes them a perfect match for broader clothing items, such as sweaters, which can be
