  1. Welcome Volunteers!

  2. MPS Motto Middletown Primary is a “great place to come and learn.” We hope you will join us in carrying on this motto.

  3. Purpose of Orientation • To welcome and thank all of our volunteers. • To acquaint you with our policies, procedures and building initiatives. • To answer any questions you may have about volunteering at MPS. • To tour MPS and become acclimated with our equipment.

  4. What is volunteering? • An integral part of our school program. • Working with individual students or small groups of students under the discretion of the teacher. • Assisting the teacher with a variety of organizational tasks • Completing volunteer work at home • Babysitting for a parent while they are volunteering.

  5. Scheduling • Teachers and/teams will create volunteer schedules based on their specific needs and classroom activities. • Schedules will be sent out. • Please follow the schedule. If you have extra time for volunteering, always contact the teacher first for approval.

  6. Attendance • Teachers rely on you to be a key player in the instructional program. • Please call the school if you are unable to volunteer on your scheduled day. 240-566-0200

  7. Character Counts Pillars of Character: • Trustworthiness • Respect • Responsibility • Fairness • Caring • Citizenship

  8. HALL System • H: Hands to self • A: All eyes forward • L: Lips Sealed • L: Low Speed

  9. Sign In • In compliance with the law, all visitors coming into the building must sign in and wear an identification badge. • The visitor laptop is located in the front office. • Your hours of service make a difference!

  10. Confidentiality • A priority! • Information about a student or teacher should never be discussed outside of the school or with another person unless it is with a necessary staff member. • Contact the teacher or an administrator with any concerns that you may have. • Thank you for your help in keeping MPS information or data secure.

  11. Food Allergy Precautions • Food items of any kind should never be distributed to a child without the permission of the homeroom teacher. • If a child complains to you that they aren’t feeling well, please inform the teacher immediately.

  12. Respecting Instructional Time • When you come in to volunteer, this is NOT the time to have a meeting with the teacher to discuss your child’s progress. • If you need to meet with a teacher, please set up a different time and place that is convenient to both. • Please respect the teacher’s planning time and other special duties.

  13. Discipline • Discipline of all students is to be done by a staff member. • Please do not distribute personal notes, tokens or prizes without teacher approval. • If you are working with a child or a small group and difficulty arises, let the teacher know immediately. • Remember it is the behavior of the student we disapprove of, not the student. • Staff members will distribute CC Awards.

  14. Reporting Suspected Child Abuse or Neglect • Address your concerns with a staff member and/or an administrator. We will assist you with the process for reporting abuse or neglect.

  15. Fire Drills • Everyone must exit the building. • Exit with the nearest class.

  16. Lockdown Drills • Full Lockdown • Partial Lockdown

  17. Emergency Situations In the event of a student injury: • Contact the teacher. • Contact the office or health room. • Request a pair of rubber gloves from the classroom teacher in the event of bodily fluid contact. • To report an emergency – contact a staff member or office. • Again, confidentiality is important.

  18. Restrooms • Located in the front hallway.

  19. Dress Code • Dress appropriately for your task. For example, your dress would be different for a field trip to a farm than a regular volunteer day. • Staff enjoy “Spirit Days” on Fridays.

  20. Mailboxes • If you have a note or other materials for a staff member please report to the front office for assistance. • Mailboxes are for staff members only.

  21. Phone Calls • School phones are to be used by volunteers only in emergency situations. • Please check with the office staff, they can assist you with getting an outside line. • Cell phone use is prohibited inside the building. Please silence or turn-off all cell phones while you are in the building.

  22. Nuts and Bolts • Copy paper should be provided by the teacher. If you need paper, check with the teacher. • Paper jam in copier? Please don’t attempt to fix; go to office for help. • No index paper in copiers • More than a class set of copies? Use copier in workroom.

  23. Staff Lounge • Please do not use the lounge as a place to do volunteer work.

  24. Thank you for being such a valuable partner to the MPS Team!
