Significance of Topic • More prone to contract a disease without being vaccinated. • Then you have to deal with the unwanted side effects of diseases. • Reoccurrence of diseases like Measles and Small Pox could lead to epidemic. • Organizations, schools, and daycares require immunizations to enroll.

  3. Research Question • What are Rowan students’ misconceptions and overall knowledge about immunization for children?

  4. Subjects of the Survey

  5. Demographics of the Subjects • Commuter = 57% and Residents = 43% • Male = 42% and Female = 58% • Immunized as a child: Yes: 96% and No: 4% • Elementary School Attended: Public: 75% and Private: 25% • High School Attended: Public: 71% and Private: 29%

Immunizations contains either a dead or a weakened germ, or parts of it, that cause a particular disease. • Correct answer: True • 79% of Rowan students answered correctly • 21% of Rowan students answered incorrectly • This shows that Rowan students have knowledge on what immunizations contains.

Children have to get specific types of immunizations in order to enter most schools and/or daycares. • Correct answer: True • 86% of Rowan students answered correctly • 14% of Rowan students answered incorrectly • The reason that the students answered correctly could be that most of the Rowan students attended public school were immunizations are required to go to school so the students have first hand experience.

Discussion of Myth Continued: • The Health Resource Center states, “For a vaccine to be included on the annual Recommended Childhood Immunization Schedule for the United States, it must first be approved by the Advisory Committee on Immunizations Practices from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Academy of Family Physicians.”

How many shots do children have before turning two? • Correct answer: 15 shots • 33% of students answered correctly • 67% of students answered incorrectly • The results of the survey demonstrates that Rowan students do not contain the essential knowledge of immunizations when it comes to what vaccinations children will need before age two.

It is not required for commuters or students living in apartments. • This illustrates that Rowan students are unaware of the immunizations that are required.

Review: • The Rowan students appear to have more knowledge in the True/False section of the survey. • This raised the question of whether the students actually had knowledge regarding immunizations or if the students took an educated guess since the students have a 50/50 percent chances of answering correctly.

  18. Review Continued: • Immunizations are imperative for ALL to get. The benefits far out way any of the minor reactions that one may receive afterwards. • Most reactions only include redness and swelling around the injection site.
